The LCDs that I saw looked good, but the ones that I liked were mucho, mucho dinero. Projectors are much cheaper, excluding surround sound and all that.

Good projectors also benefit from good screens. Make sure to include those in your price comparisons. good luck

I don't watch much television these days, but my four year old does. He doesn't watch much, but I'd still like him to watch some educational programs every now and then.

LOL. That's true if all you do is dump your child in front of a TV and say you're done. But I actually stimulate his brain with questions about stuff he's watching just to get his mojo working. Trust me, TV is not my answer to education, but it helps when you want him to learn stuff and you've run out of things for him to do at that age.

I need to buy a flat screen television. I'm thinking of getting an LCD instead of a Plasma, but I was wondering if anyone has bought a TV projector and what they think of it? What speakers would I need with that too? Also, I checked the prices out at Worst Buy, but was wondering if anyone has any other recommendations? Thanks!

Check out the price of replacement bulbs for a projector - and the expected life of the bulb. If it is genuinely for your 4 year old I would just buy the cheapest no-name brand you can (or, better still, buy him some leggo, building bricks, paints, soccer balls, plants, cookery items, books, musical instruments) HD quality is not going to make a spliff of difference to someone of that age (indeed One In Five HDTV Owners Can't Tell Standard Def From HD[^]) We do have a TV (I have a five year old) and we try to limit the TV (none on school mornings, for example) he watches. He actually prefers documentaries most of the time (but also likes funniest home videos and talent shows). Being a single child, it's kinda hard sometimes to entertain him, so having the TV there is good (for us) but can be an issue. Telling him he can't watch it is much harder than just not having one at all!

Collegue has a projector, equivalent of 100" screen. There are many pros & cons but the main one was the projector needs a darker room than a TV, note note darkened just darker. This guy spent substantial funds on his set as he is a videophile so I trust his judgement on quality, his take on value on the other hand is completely skewed.

Projectors suck. We have a plasma, I think. It's a panasonic, 65", the biggest you can buy. With a blu ray pixar movie, the quality is just astonishing.

True, but not watching much and not watching period are not the same. ;) I'm not looking for something expensive, just something that's worth it, for TV and movies. My son loves Wubbzy, Tom & Jerry, and anything with animals. I'll go for sci-fi.

65" is too much. I heard LCD is better than plasma. Is there ghosting on it? We got one at work and it left ghost images within two days.

I'm sure it was a bit longer than that. Chris needs to get rid of the search engine and implement a member query instead. You guys have long term memory and load faster. In my defense, I did say I already decided on LCD and just wanted to know if getting a projector is better. I don't think I've asked about projectors before. :)

What you REALLY want to do is buy a very nice monitor for your PC, 26+ inches with 1920x1280, and a TV eating PC video card. Than you can use it for both. My wife's TV is also her monitor, 22", 1920x1080. She usually does not watch TV and use the computer at the same time, but with image scaling, she can if she wants to. Convergence.

I don't watch much television these days, but my four year old does. He doesn't watch much, but I'd still like him to watch some educational programs every now and then.

The best benefit I got from TV (and most people from my generation) was learning English by watching tons of Cartoon Network. Till a few years ago, most channels on cable were not doubled or translated, so we learned just by watching an listening. There was also a great hunger for cartoons after '89, as before the communism crumbled we only got like 15 minutes of cartoons per week, on Saturdays.

Thanks!

If you are going to put it in a bright room, LCD is the way to go. They are generally brighter and have less glare from ambient light. Projectors are less expensive up front for the same size, but when you factor in a screen and the cost/lifespan of replacement bulbs not so much. Whatever you buy, make sure you see it in operation because there is a vast difference between different manufacturers even with the same specs. And I found that what was the best in all the reviews I read made me motion sick and did not look that great to me personally.

Projectors suck. We have a plasma, I think. It's a panasonic, 65", the biggest you can buy. With a blu ray pixar movie, the quality is just astonishing.

Agreed, We too have a Panasonic Plasma in the smaller 42" and it knocks the socks off of all the LCD screens I've seen. It bugs me that so many people have a downer on plasma, they are just as sturdy as any other screen display technology, but the picture quality is far superior :) :-D
