I agree. I've been trying to think of a name for the Soapbox that will encourage more people to use it to have a rant, thus freeing up the lounge for more on-topic stuff. Speaker's Corner? Rant and Rave? Flame Central? Any more ideas? cheers, Chris Maunder

What about "Developers Lounge" and "Off-Topic Soapbox" Moderators in the Devleopers Lounge could nix off topic posts. But the lounge is precisely the place where you're supposed to post "bullshit" messages. (I've posted my fair share too I guess, come to think of it) But maybe we should experiment with getting rid of the lounge altogether for a while and see what difference is made. Might get more people trawling the programming forums instead. After all, we could always post "bullshit" messages on msn or sonork etc. ASP.NET can never fail as working with it is like fitting bras to supermodels - it's one pleasure after the next - David Wulff

For when you want to discuss more relevant topics, there's over a dozen specific forums, plus general discussion, work issues, and collaboration. I don't think *you* need to change anything Chris. I think people posting here need to change. Changing the name of the soapbox won't help anyway (you already did that once, and nothing really changed). Maybe I'm just a lot more short-tempered than I used to be. Hell, maybe I've grown out of CP (and matured beyond needing/believing in Microsoft's "vision"). Feel like starting a Linux group, or a separate Linux version of CP? Would that torque Microsoft's jaws too much (since they appear to be a fairly major sponsor here). What is "on-topic" for the lounge, Chris? Like others, I haven't been around all that long, but it seems to me that General Discussions is for general programming discussions (and you can see how many posts that gets ;)). Like in the real world, The Lounge is for sitting around talking about nothing in particular and the SoapBox is for rants. If anything needs renaming, I'd go for "General Discussions" but I wouldn't know where to start with what it should be called. Paul

The lounge was designed for a place for people to come in and relax, not to post flames and blatent trolls. As it is also featured heavily on the front page, some of the recent topic titles might appear off putting to first time visitors. Michael Programming is great. First they pay you to introduce bugs into software. Then they pay you to remove them again.

What about setting up some kind of moderator system whereby messages which are out of context can be moved or deleted by people with the correct privilliges? Seems to work for other sites. Cheers James

I understand. So we would like to keep all controversial topics in the Soapbox, correct? (ie. religion, politics, meaning of life) Maybe an explicit message stating that in the Lounge, along with some moderating for a week or so, might help to train. Moderating could also be done by long time members, just like any other society. Where which message goes may seem obvious, but appparently its not, so people just need to be told, I'm sure they aren't misusing the board intentionally. What "topics" are bullshit and which are not bullshit? i.e. What kind of topics do you see as being Lounge orientated and which should go in the Soapbox? I think that there is a real need for a 'Politics' message board, as these seem to incite the most ranting and angry posts.
