Hey, I don't have to explain my art to you. If you aren't smart enough to get it, you should go read X-MEN.[^] Tim Smith "Programmers are always surrounded by complexity; we can not avoid it... I agree. I've been trying to think of a name for the Soapbox that will encourage more people to use it to have a rant, thus freeing up the lounge for more on-topic stuff. Speaker's Corner? Rant and Rave? Flame Central? Any more ideas? cheers, Chris Maunder
Well I have to say I don't understand. I have always thought "The Lounge" was a place for us "sort of" like minded people to come and shoot the breeze on just about any subject. But I do agree, renaming it won't help. Only warning messages and moderation. (ick) But do with it what you want. It is your site. You won't get a hissy fit from me (already met my quota this month). I don't think *you* need to change anything Chris. I think people posting here need to change. Changing the name of the soapbox won't help anyway (you already did that once, and nothing really changed). Maybe I'm just a lot more short-tempered than I used to be. Hell, maybe I've grown out of CP (and matured beyond needing/believing in Microsoft's "vision"). Feel like starting a Linux group, or a separate Linux version of CP? Would that torque Microsoft's jaws too much (since they appear to be a fairly major sponsor here). I wiped Windows off my primary machine (and one of two secondry machines) at home, and have started writing Linux apps. ------- signature starts "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001 Please review the Legal Disclaimer in my bio. ------- signature ends

But then again, there's already sourceforge. ASP.NET can never fail as working with it is like fitting bras to supermodels - it's one pleasure after the next - David Wulff

What "topics" are bullshit and which are not bullshit? i.e. What kind of topics do you see as being Lounge orientated and which should go in the Soapbox? Politics, religion, sex, links etc. I assume by you are not suitable for the Lounge? Just curious :) (and is this thread itself Lounge safe?)

Chris Maunder wrote: Rant and Rave? That's my vote! A lot more "stuff" seems to have drifted into the Lounge since the Soapbox name came into being. Or perhaps The Mudroom would work - that anteroom where you take of the galoshes, shake off the mud and dust, and hang up your slicker before entering the house...

I thought the lounge was for non programming stuff. What exactly is the "topic". It would get real boring real fast if all we talked about was sports and fashion and what we ate for breakfast. It takes balls to admit that in the Lounge. ;) I hope you have a ball doing Unix stuff as I once did. It's a very free environment in that most (if not all) API's are very simple and elegant allowing you to write pretty elegant stuff. I really do miss writing Unix stuff for a living. :( Preferred storyline: - I am your father. Search your feelings and you'll know it's the truth. Kinda swimming upstream, don't you think? Obviously, people aren't going to go to the Soapbox no matter you call it, as they clearly want to do their ranting in the lounge. Consequently, I suggest a little bit of Forum Aikido. Instead of resisting what's happening, trying to change something that doesn't want to change, why not roll with it? Eliminate the Soapbox. Leave the Lounge as is, and let the rants continue. However, add a new area along the lines of "Programmers' Pub", where people who want to talk techie can congregate. Lounge is for ranting, news items, religious wars, etc. Programmers' Pub is for, how did you put it, more on-topic stuff. See how easy that is? :-D It's true that you can lead a horse to water, but if you can get him to walk on it you can charge a cover... What are you all bitter about, man?:confused: It's just a fucking message board, after all. Jeez. It's not like there's some cosmic balance thrown off, because too many people rant in the Lounge. :) BW {insert witty/thought-provoking saying here}
