Do I need Vista as developer?

OK, i had vista worked fine for almost 3 months (yeaaaaah) and then for some reason (as usual) it stopped getting update, and some programs stopped working properly!!!!!!!.:mad: After search online for almost 3 weeks for a solution, i got nothing.:mad: The only way to fix this is format and install windows again. :( I'm trying to do that for 4 days (more than 20 times) but with no luck. Every time i install it i wouldn't be able to get all feature under (Turn on and off Windows feature). From my experience I know if i'm not able to get these feature, so forget it don't wast time and install windows again. THERE IS NO SOLUTION FOR THAT PROBLEM AT ALL. even Windows creator don't know how to fix it. So the question, is do i need vista as .NET developer or, go back to XP, switch to Mac/Linux or what????:confused:

I am sure you did not do anything to cause this, but with other people I have seen too many "fee" products being downloaded from the internet, various plug-ins, toolbars, anti-spyware/adware (which are mostly the same as spyware/adware), each with their own auto-updating and registration reminder, etc. It can make any machine useless.

I've been using Vista for 8 months now and have not had a single issue. In fact, I am running Vista on 4 computers (my gaming machine, my laptop, my work laptop and my wife's laptop). Her computer has one issue with the Zune software, but that is it. What problem did you have exactly?

I was the same way, but then I noticed that once Vista starts to go south it is a fast trip downhill. XP just seems to be a bit more forgiving when things start to go wrong. In my case it was a bad stick of RAM. 2 Blue screens and the entire system seemed to just never be the same. I removed the bad RAM (obviously) but the system was never stable after that. faced with a pending reinstall I figured that Vista had been fun but in the long run really offered me no REAL value so I went back to good old XP pro.

I found some value with Vista. The networking of all my home PCs just worked. I had no issues at all. I just use \\CompName and I was able to share everything. All I had to do was add the user account to each PC. I never had so much luck with XP. Also, it is more secure than XP. I know people hat UAC, but I actually like.

I'm sure you'll get some flames for that. I don't have Vista, but I remember all these complaints about XP when it came out. At some point people are going to have to upgrade/switch because MS won't provide updates anymore.

Even if you do that, you'll need to pick a Windows OS to install in a VM to develop on. Personally, I picked Windows 7 (beta for now, obviously) - I'm liking it :-) At work, I'm using Windows 2000 (oh yeah!) and XP - I'm quite happy sticking with XP there.

Yes. You don't need it to develop on but you sure as hell need it to test on because deployment and things like providing a proper manifest and testing under UAC are critical for Vista and Windows 7. In terms of Vista problems and stability those days are long behind us, I developed on it as my main dev os since just before commercial release of Vista right up to a few months ago when I switched to Virtual development. Given adequate modern hardware there is no reason not to use vista for development. Personally I think the future for development is a very fast computer with VMWare workstation on it and developing inside Virtual machines. That's what I've been doing and many others have turned to as well. Currently I use all XP simply because of the lighter footprint but I can see a time going forward when I'll likely be using all windows 7.

People said the same thing about the win98 to win2k transition as well. I remember "You can have my DOS6.22 floppies when you pry them from my cold dead hands" as well. I'm sure it goes farther back but I'm not old enough to remember...

I hear Mono is doing rather well lately. I think someone even managed to statically link the required libraries into the executable and get it to run without any external files
