The only likely result of such a policy would be that health insurance companies would revise their policies to exclude coverage for injuries incurred as a result of Military service. Since most plicies are renewed annually, the government would soon have no one to bill. In the case of policies aquired after the service, it is a mute point, since as Mike G. Pointed out, all current policies exclude pre-existing conditions. As a reasonable human being of whatever political persuasion, I would expect you to want the government to be responsible and pay for treatment of on the job injuries to it's employees.

I hate to be the spelling police, but this one really gets me. It's a moot point. It's not that the point can't talk, it's that it has 'no legal significance'.

I would think that as a fiscal conservative you would be in favor of saving the taxpayers money when veterans have overlapping coverage.

I do love the overuse of the word 'hero' in the USA. I guess it's part of a culture of warfare. Having said that, if what you say is true, that totally blows. I'd be amazed he'd try it, it would surely be the end of his re-election chances, and the beginning of some hard work for his security team. Good idea - annoy all the people who know how to shoot a gun. That's not the only reason, if someone offers to risk their life for their country, their country owes them. It sure as hell owes them medical treatment if injured.

You gotta wonder about the Marines that are stationed at the White House. If he managed to get something like that passed, would the Marines guarding him be as willing to take a bullet for him if they knew they'd be financially responsible for their wounds if they got hit? If I were Obama, I'd seriously re-think this whole thing.

My family visited the grassy knoll while in Dallas ( I'd been before ). It was interesting. I'm not sure what I believe anymore, I feel like I'm too far removed from the event to trust the sources that have a vested interest in making me believe it was more than Oswald. I was at a family BBQ the other day where people were talking about how there was a conspiracy, amazing how after all this time, people still are that interested. I do suspect that you're right, I just feel it's hard to judge, especially when there's a whole industry surrounding the event ( we were sold a newspaper for $8 to tell us the 'truth' about what happened, when standing on the knoll )

I didn't think it was possible in "The Back Room". Or is it only ratings that are disabled? :) Irony was, of course, intended. I'm a vet and I think line-of-duty injuries should be fully covered by VA for as long as it takes to cure or for life if need be.

So if the government paid for private health care they'd get their choice of service provider rather than dealing with the wait for a VA hospital which I understand can be very long (much like the waiting lists for public health care here) and they'd be putting money into the free market.

I don't understand how health insurance works in the US generally - but he isn't saying (according to the article_) that he wants the ex-servicepeople to pay, but for insurance companies to pay. Who pays for the premiums, for any excess? Of course, if $504m can be saved by this change, either it is being administered very badly, fraudulently, or he is expecting servicemen to cough up the $504m - which, one would think, would be no only politicl suicide, but suicide for so smalla (comparitive) saving.
