So the problem is that the system is not self policing and needs oversight ?

It never was self-policing, and no one said that it was, or expected it to be. What has happened is that the system has been intentionally undermined by government to create just the fiasco we are now experiencing so that people will accept the state taking direct control of the entire economic engine.

Chaining ourselves to the moral high ground does not make us good guys. Aside from making us easy targets, it merely makes us idiotic prisoners of our own self loathing.

I hate to be speaking for John. I suspect that John C is the only one who catches the nuances of everything he says, but I am pretty sure that is exactly what Zep was saying, from long before the crash.

What I find quite interesting is that every country on the planet achieved their own prosperity without any impetus from the U.S. economy (especially France) but that without exception they all started failing as soon as the American economic engine began to stall out.

I simply cannot explain otherwise how anyone could make this kind of a lunatic statement: So the problem is that the system is not self policing and needs oversight ? I would like for you to provide evidence that anyone ever said that the system should be 'self policing' and didn't 'need oversight'. Who was it that was saying that? Who was trying to achieve that? The events that have occurred happened with the government standing there watching them occur in the full light of day. They were actually part of the process. How could that process possibly have been any more 'policed' than it was? Its like a bank robbery where the police are not only standing and watching, but actually loading the bank robbers weapons for them, making sure they work properly, giving the bank robbers training, and driving the get away cars. And then, after the bank has actually been robbed, have you outside screaming about inadequate policing. The police are part of the fucking problem, Christian. But you refuse to accept the obvious because of your own tin foil hat paranoia about 'greedy capitalism'. And because they were so helpful to the bank robbers, the police are now demanding even more power and authority, and you are perfectly happy to give it to them. SOcialism has failed compltely every single time it has ever been tried. So, how do you resurrect it? You use it to undermine capitalistic processes and than blame the problem on capitalism. This was a conspiracy, Chritian, and obviously so from beginning to end. It was planned, implemented, and successfully accomplished.

At what point will they have pumped enough money into the economy to pay off everyone's mortgages ? I mean, if people owned their homes, that would fix a core issue, and then give them more money to spend, right ? not saying this is wise, just perhaps MORE wise than what is going on right now....

Every dollar they print by fiat reduces the value of the dollars already in circulation. They aren't paying off peoples mortgages with this, rather they are paying off the banks that bought bad mortgages (likely already in default)for those bad mortgages. This will only aggravate the problem by adding massive inflation to our ills, and worrying the daylights out of the holders of existing treasurys, who see the value of their investments plunging.

I dont see him imitating Obama so much as wanting to be more than he is. I dont think any Australian PM has ever been a true statesman and as much as Rudd would like to think of himself that way it just makes me embarrassed.

I reckon the situation here is no where as bad as the government would like us to think it is. It's certainly not great and not as good as it was 2 years ago but it's not a disaster. Our banking sector is strong, house prices continue to rise in most areas and the company I work for is hiring but has not been flooded with applications. We're in the finance industry and had expected there would be many programmers with a finance background looking for work. The Rudd government are all show and very little substance. If the situation is a bad as they'd like us to think it is then why dont they put the politicking aside and form a bipartisan approach to dealing with it? Instead they put bills before parliament to give the massive surplus amassed by the previous government away to the population and accuse the opposition of wanting to destroy the economy when they delay the bill a day to review it. The message is "this is so important we should bypass the political process and you should just trust us". He apologized to the indigenous population but maintained the previous governments "intervention" in the NT which violates their constitutional rights in a number of ways. They can do this because the Northern Territory like the ACT is a territory not a state and is administered by the federal government. He ratified the Kyoto protocol and appointed an MP to the new portfolio of climate change but only committed to a 5% emissions reduction by 2020. The Green party that gave him their preferences at the last election were not so happy about that one. The unions here essentially paid for the Labor party's election campaign and installed Rudd as the leader of the Labor party. They are out to collect their debt. I doubt very much if Carson would agree with much I've said but there is nothing a
