... is coupled with malingering shoddiness. And it's beginning to PMO a treat. For example, this morning my Canon EOS 400D decided enough was enough and packed up completely. After about half an hour of tech support, the conclusion was the thing is forked and needs to be repaired. But not under warranty, oh no, that ran out 3 months ago :| Now compare that to my Canon AE-1, which I bought second hand in 1984. After 25 years it still works perfectly, has never needed any sort of repair and still produces stunning results. I have half a mind just to stick the EOS in the bin and revert to film.

Truth! End the teeth brushes are not what they used to be. I used my previous one/Oak handle, horse-hair./ for 25 years without a single problem. The new one becomes bald for only a couple of years – and there is no warranty!

For the first time in many years I recently came across an inanimate object of desire and it was a digital camera: http://us.leica-camera.com/photography/m_system/m8/[^] That thing to me is the archetype for what good electronic gadgets should be, so cool, so slick, so well thought out that you almost don't even realize it's electronic at all. Something timeless that you could easily envision still using decades from now. Unfortunately it's tremendously expensive but it represents everything possible with modern, seriously engineered timeless technology as a perfect counter to the current disposable ethos.
