What is the difference between GeForce2 and GeForce4 ? Is one MUCH faster than the other ? I´m probably buying a GeForce MX something today... but I need to know the differences between than. Can anyone can point me a benchmark site or something about these video cards? I have a Geforce2 MX, and I'm very happy with it. Nice 2d output in high resolutions. Good 3D quality / speed in games like GP4 and neverwinter nights. And nice tv-out to watch DVD movies on my tv. GF2 might be a little out of date now, but will do the job for most things (don't know about those Doom 451 games). Of course, if you've got money galore, buy a Geforce 4 Ti 4200. I have a GF2 MX. I have no problems with it, and it runs everything that I have, at the resolutions that I am happy with. If you are on a budget, it's not a bad alternative. If you want to run Doom 3 though... well then I believe you are going to need a GF3 or better. To get the most out of the game you'll need a Ti4200 or better.
Geforce 2 is so ancient these days that I've seen folks practically give these away. Don't buy anything less than something based on Geforce 3 or 4 (Stick with 4 if you can) The whole idea behind the MX series of chips is essentially taking the normal Geforce core and castrating it to make a 'value' series of thip. For instance, they diable half the pipelines, give it a substatially lower clock and use slower RAM. Are they good cards, well...Decent may be a better term. They are not performance cards. If all you're gonna do is write non-multimedia, non-DirectX based stuff on it, its probably adequate. However, if you like to play graphic intensive games (which basically is any game currently on the market these days) then an MX series will be slow, laggy and you'll have to cut detail and options to the minimum. The Ti (Titanium) series of cards is the big brother to MX. And these are the thoroughbred cards. They can be pricy if you go top of the line but you get a card that iwll fill the need for a couple years. As an interesting side note, Nvidia isn't king anymore. About 3 or 4 weeks ago the new ATI card was benchmarked and beat the current Ti 4600 chipset in every category. Nvidia's roadmap only has a clockspeed boost scheduled for the 4600 series this year with nothing seriously new till sometime Q1 of next year. The speculation is that the clockspeed boost will not be significant enough to beat the ATI 9700 Pro significantly and that the video card market may see a fall in prices as Nvidia based cards are cut to attempt to keep focus on them and not the new ATI cards that are hitting the market. Basiclly it's a wait and see market right now. I'm in the market for a new videocard myself but I'm holding out till November in hopes the price cutting will have begun. I agree, I have a Gainward GeForce4 Ti4200 and the Gainward card with better coolers can be overclocked to 4600 performance levels. The extra cooler/heatsink kist are about $10.. Elaine (fluffy tigress emoticon) Would you like to meet my teddy bear ?

This is great news. Make nVidia work for it!!!! nVidia is a perfect example of an upstart company taking over a market dominated by another. They cleaned 3dfx's clock. The sad part is, 3dfx did most of it to themselves. With nVidia having such competition with ATI, it is a win-win for the consumer. Very true. I tend to play RTS games more than FPS. However Deus Ex played magnificently, and AvP2 also played well. The current games I have been playing are Warcraft3 and NeverWinter Nights. Both play really well. I suspect I'll have to upgrade for Doom 3, and Duke Nukem Forever after it stops taking forever to make (it's been five or six years now.) I'll cross that bridge... There has been some talk that computer graphics will start to be limited by the speed of the CPU sometime soon. The theory is that the graphics cards are getting so fast that they are outrunning the CPU and are being bottlenecked by it. When that happens we'll need to buy all the latest hardware to play Doom 6.

:omg::wtf:For the dear love of God DO NOT buy a GF4mx. It is nothing but a renamed GF2. I repeat - Do not buy it. Buy a GF3 instead or if u really can't afford it buy a GF2. Atleast it costs less than a crapp GF4MX and is just as fast. :mad:Nvidia really f**ked up on the GF4mx and GF4Go - they set back the market another couple of years. Warcraft and NWN has nice graphics but to me they are only a enhanced itteration of a previous engine. The graphics engine in NWN for instance is supposed to be a complete rewrite but it shows alot of the aspects of the original Infinity engine that Baldur's gate Series was based on. I haven't looked in detail at the options in NWN, but I'm not sure NWN uses T&L either which is what will really stress the Geforce Cards. When I say graphics intensive, I'm talking stuff that's starting to show up in things like Asheron's Call 2 or SW Galaxies for instance. Maybe I'm spoiled, but when I'm looking at water, i wanta see my reflection in the waves and have it distort it if I toss a rock in it :) I'm not saying an MX won't work but there are plenty of benchmarks out there that show that the MX *WILL* bog down when you really push the detail and polygon count or activate things like intense T&L. This can be mitigated by running the app (game) at a lower resolution as you mentioned. For me, and this is my opinion, I prefer not to be looking at a game in 640x480 modes that look like they were setup for my grandma when she goes blind ;) For those looking for a card, a quick tour of the pricing sites found plenty of Geforce Ti 4600 based card down arround the $170-190 range.

Whilst the GeForce4MX in itself isn't a bad card, it's less powerful and more expensive than a top of the range GeForce3 - which is why it gets called bad things. The GF2MX was a great budget card -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

My brother this year had finnished his Industrial Design degree , and he works a lot on graphic applications and he says that GF4 is much better to accelerate 3dsMax.
