I know, but pronunciation please? I want a TALKING translation, there are machines you can buy that do it, but they are hundreds of pounds and I want something I can download to my netbook.

What about text-to-speech? All those promises of talking intelligent computers, I wonder if that day will ever come. By the current look of the industry, I think computer might figure out how to do it before we can...

xacc.ide - now with TabsToSpaces support
    IronScheme - 1.0 beta 2 - out now!

15 months in advance, I am off to Egypt for Xmas and New Year first, Vietnam in June 2010. I need to prepare, 18 days travelling from Saigon to Hanoi. (Slightly quicker than the US took!)

I am saving for next years holiday to Vietnam. I would like to know if there is an application where I can type in an English Phrase, and the computer will turn it into Vietnamese. I need to explain, I know there are English-Vietnamese translations available, but I cannot read Vietnamese and the various accents and tildes and circumflexes are a mystery to me. What I am after is something that will Say Out Loud In Vietnamese what I type in English. I have googled and have had zero luck.

I'm pretty sure that there's an iPhone app that will do this for you. However, I'm still a little puzzled about why it's going to be of any use though, especially if the person you're talking to can't speak English. You can't read a menu so you couldn't order food, you can't ask for directions etc. Apart from 'My name is Dave' ("Tên tôi là Dave" in case you need to know!), what good is it going to be?

          It definitely isn't definatley

I am English! We didn't get to run the World by LISTENING to people, we gave orders! I want a machine or app that I can type into, it will then turn that into speech and the person I play it too will listen and do as he is told ,I will hasten him along with a dismissive wave of the hand.

It's merely 'Resting', we are letting the children play for a while, but soon we will get off our arses, give them a clip round the ear and send them to bed early!

Complete waste of time, a bastardised form of english is spoken in most areas where you are likely to travel. Other than trying to be polite to a host country you will almost certainly not need it to get around. Unless you are travelling really low style (bike or local bus or hitching) you probably won't need it. Like a lot of the rest of Asia you will be viewed as a walking wallet, treated well and expected to pay. If you accept that then you can have a great time. I found Vietnam one of the most aggressively commercial places to travel in, Indonesia and India being the absolute epitomy of grab the money. Vietnam is a great place to go, some fascinating places, we are going to central Vietnam next month for 4 days.

I am pretty sure you can get a Vietnamese translator who weighs under 100 pounds, who can also carry your notebook for you. :-D

I have my wife for that! Actually I have discovered a lot of Vietnamese speak French, so I should be ok. Else that or I will have to learn Vietnamese, but that shouldn't be too hard, it is based on Cantonese.

Antarctica, but that is in the early planning stage. Roughly... London -> Buenos Aires -> Punta Arenas (Patagonia) -> Ross Ice Shelf -> South Pole (US Antarctic Base). (Cost is likely to be about £30,000 so I need to plan, save, get some sponsorship)

I am pretty sure you can get a Vietnamese translator who weighs under 100 pounds, who can also carry your notebook for you. :-D
