Could someone have figured out your password and set your biography (perhaps a spammer)?

This particular tabbed UI is very recent, but the biography feature is about 5-6 years old. Anyway I think you should change your CP password and perhaps the password associated with your CP email too.

Hey Hans, No, it hasn't blue-screened since that day. Though now I shut down the laptop at night - previously I just used to close the lid. Obviously I don't want it to blue-screen again, but if it does I would have been able to figure out from the error codes you gave me that day what part of the hardware is failing.

Hey Hans, Spoke too soon. It blue-screened on shutdown last night but it rebooted by the time I got there. I used dumpchk on the mini-dump file and it said the stop code is 9F. And from your document, I got this - "The Stop 0x9F message indicates that a driver is in an inconsistent or invalid power state." I am kinda relieved that it's not ram or the hard-disk. But I have not installed any new devices recently, so I wonder if windows update updated some driver. I also installed Symantec AV recently - wonder if that may have messed something up. And I also configured a new VPN recently and it may have installed some custom network driver (this one connects via a special browser plugin). I wish it would tell me which particular driver or service caused the problem.

                                    Regards, Nish

                                      1. anything in the event log? 2. did you disable auto reboot? 3. did you apply that MS patch? It's almost certainly a driver, and it sounds like a printer driver - I think you said you were printing via usb port. Maybe left-clicking and stopping the usb device when you're done printing will stop the bluescreen. Is it a Dell? Have you tried searching their site?

I meant to but forgot. Wish I had because I think the blue screen possibly might have a lot more info.

No, I wanted to be sure this is USB related. Yesterday, I had rebooted after a Windows Update and then until shutdown (when it bluescreened), I had not used the printer or any other USB device. Well my keyboard and mouse are both USB devices, but I'd be surprised that after 2 years of use they decided to develop a problem.

It's a Dell. I didn't search their site but I Googled a lot and I think Google will have indexed their site too. I'll try direct Dell search too just to be sure. Thanks for all the advice you keep giving, Hans. I really appreciate it.

Dell tech support is pretty good in my experience (and you're talking to someone who only buys Dells). If you think the person you're talking to doesn't know jack, they will honor your request to escalate the incident. There are other things to try, of course, like stopping the usb device, and even trying another cable. Oh, and do you have cats? They love to sit right on the laptop - it's a heating pad to them. My friend's laptop keyboard was stuffed with cat hairs, although I don't think that's your problem.
