Careful there, you're in danger of being seen as a neocon with opinions like that... Personal responsibility is not a liberal tenet, at least not in today's America. You're supposed to want the government to take care of things like that.

Yes but back then there was nothing out here but dirt and yucka plants. Considerably different scenario now.

The supply of money. Money is not an abstract concept that can be treated separately from the sphere of commodities; money is itself a commodity: in a free market, money is the kind of commodity that is considered most exchangeable. With prices of all vendible items expressed in terms of a single commodity, transaction costs are greatly diminished, requiring fewer resources for making exchange possible, thereby contributing to higher productivity and higher standards of living. The use of money as an accounting tool provides for an accurate expression of an individual's opportunity cost. There are two kinds of money: "sound money," which is, in essence, currency that is a, or is backed by another, valuable commodity (like gold or silver). Since it can be printed as easily as any other kind of paper (or simply exist as entries in an electronic ledger) the goverment can increase the amount of money whenever it chooses to do so. This inflation of the money supply without any concommitant increase in real wealth leads to every other commodity become more expensive. (with apologies to Ludwig Von Mises)

Which returns right back as a direct result of consuming. Henry Ford had to deal with recession in his day and his solution was to give all of his employees raises and ecourage them to by Ford vehicles. It worked. That increase in wages led right back into his economy. He got it.
