Bob's ready for riggin'

That is quite the protruding belly button. Does this mean Bob can reproduce?
Todd Smith
I was thinking that was going to be his combined speech/waste output unit. But maybe someone else knows better? All I've got for a reference is the little guy's picture on the front page, which is admittedly pretty sparse...

are you writting an article on this? Have you used XNA at all?
I wasn't planning on it. What would it be on? Creating a 3D character? I would assume that to be a bit outside the norm around here.

Nope. All I know is that it's something for building games on the XBox, right?

Excellent! Once you get enough animation stuff down, I say we create a Code Project game with Bob. He has to battle the horrid PlzNow Zombies that are attempting to take over the world by caging all the Code Project hamsters. It's Bob's mission to find and release all the hamsters before it's too late. He has but a single weapon: The Smilie Shooter. Each smilie has different impact/effect. Power-ups include: sheep, cow, beer, flower, etc... Dang, I wish I had more time to do something like this ... that would be a blast.

There're 6,103,371 members, and rumour has it 127 of them can actually code. Make it an open source CP project!

Interestingly, there is more to it. The whole framework is for making games on both XBox and PC using managed code. But the interesting part is at it's core is a managed wrapper for Direct X, which makes writing 3D code from C# a whole lot easier.

Over the weekend I got Bob ready for rigging and imported into Houdini. Bob in a neutral pose[^] The next step is to set up a rigging "skeleton" to aid in animating him. I have some ideas for what I'd like to do, and I've been studying how to do rigging in Houdini, so hopefully I'll have something to show sometime soon. In the meantime there's some more details here: http://learning3dfromscratch.blogspot.com/2009/04/bob-loves-houdini.html[^]

That is looking really good Jim, especially for only recently starting out. Are you happy with the model so far? i.e. proportions, shape and overall bob-ness? And given you've been playing with Houdini for a couple of weeks, how long do you think it would take to re-create the bob model in that, rather than importing? I'm just curious as I'm going to download Houdini shortly and have some 3D fun of my own - something I've not done in years.

You can't beat the idea of combining speech and crap out of one hole!

Yeah, more or less. It's not perfect, but given I want 1) something that's fun/amusing to work with 2) something that's got a relatively simple shape 3) relatively few moving parts it's good enough.
Phil Martin... wrote:

At this point maybe half a day? There's a couple of parts I think I'd have to experiment a bit to get right, but the basic shape is pretty simple. At some point I will probably redo the model again, this completely in Houdini instead of importing. Houdini rocks, but if you're a 3D newbie like I am be prepared for a learning curve. Check out 3D Buzz for some great tutorials. Also CardanFX has some great tutorials, especially for beginners, all of which are accessible for $20 USD a month.

Can the princess look like Salma Hayak? Damn, I'll definitely have to spend some *serious* time with modeling her...

Um. I should QA that work ... just to be certain the detail levels are accurate ...

Bad Astronomy |VCF|wxWidgets|WTLNot a problem. This will probably require several iterations, to properly determine the correct subdivision levels, correct geometric proportions, etc. That won't be a problem will it?
