Bugtrack software recommendations?

Howdy ya'll, Our little C++ shop is shopping for bug tracking software. There are 4 developers and probably 3 other potential users with some orgainizational growth possible. We want to buy a good bug tracking package. The team leaders main requirement is that we able to custom design the database, input screens and reports. We use Visual Studio 6.0 and Source Safe, so integration with those would be a "nice to have", but customization is more important. We have a budget of around $2000(US). I've used Remedy in the past, which does everything we want. But I think that was on the order of $10K. I don't think we want one of these web based subscription services, because then we developers would live in fear of having the service cut off if the company failed to make a payment for what ever reason. We want to buy something to have here. Any recommendations or experience you folks have to share would be greatly appreciated. thanks Jim Howard

Well, after trying about 5 systems, we went with http://www.softwarewithbrains.com/. It isn't that fancy, don't know how well it scales, but IT WORKS. I was greatly disappointed in some of the ones you see advertised all the time. There is one package that starts with 'Visual' and integrates with SSafe and VSudio, but I had nothing but problems with the program. Here is a list of things I noticed that you should look into. 1) Crystal Report support. This feature sounds really nice, but to be perfectly honest, as long as the package generates a useful report, I don't care about being able to configure the layout of the report. In about half the packages I looked at, the crystal report integration caused more problems than it solved. 2) Data entry. One package I looked at had huge problems with data entry. It really made data entry a bear. Make sure try out all the elements of the data entry. 3) Producing bug reports. Nearly all the packages I looked at had little or no support for actually producing reports of a given subset. I don't know about you, but I want a bug system, not a crash course in SQL. These packages should at least have a solid starting port for your common reporting needs. (P.S. The package noted in the previous reply I didn't try.) Tim Smith Descartes Systems Sciences, Inc.

Sigh, I can't believe I'm going to promote this piece of software considering how much I hated it at first... but I'd say for the things you're requesting, the best package for you is probably Rational's ClearQuest. Initially I'd have called it incredibly buggy, but it really comes down to the user since you have to define the "templates" used. Moving from a simple spreadsheet to a system where you have to go through multiple steps and authorizations to fix a single minor glitch irritated me to no end at first, but it's been a life saver a couple times as well. ClearQuest can be as simple or as complicated as you like since YOU define the process. Good luck.

I have used ClearQuest and worked for a company that was a distributor for Rational. I agree with att's statement that it can be as ease or difficult as you want it to be, but for about 1500 per license (I think) it might be a bit expensive if you want to have legal software on all machines. I've used quite a few products and have my own opinions here. TestTrack) This is a pretty simple product that works quite nicely. It's very configurable, and allows you to create all kinds of custom stuff. It's also quite cheap at less than $200 a seat (And I think they do cheaper licenses if you buy in volume). DevTrack) This is kind of a standard at many places, however I didn't find it very configurable. Reports are, but data entry isn't. I haven't used the most recent versions, so I don't know if this has changed. Roughly $300 a seat (IIRC, I can't remember for sure). StarTeam) This is actually a source control tool, but it also includes Bug Tracking, which means you can more easily tie your changes to your bugs and change requests. It's a bit slow, but very feature packed and can do a lot if you live within it's "world". Roughly $600 a seat (but remember, it's a lot more than just bug tracking or version control). There are also quite a few Open Source free products, like Bugzilla, which is what the Mozilla team uses to track bugs. They are, however, probably a bear to set up.
