Obama will "shut down the country" for 10 days. Make sure you hit the grocery store before the official announcement hits the airwaves.

There is no need to panic, just rush out and buy as much of everything as you can. Including Ammunition!

Yeah. I heard it from a medical profession "muckety muck" (as opposed to some flunkie clinic doc). He stated that the federal government isn't telling us everything (what a shock) about this, and that within 72-96 hours after the WHO announced defcon 5 (which happened yesterday) that Obama would turn out the lights, so to speak. I have no idea what "shut down the country" means, but I would suspect that anything associated with large groups of people co-mingling would be closed. Frankly, I don't see how this could possibly be done, but I figured I'd share what I heard.

Is this the message you're going to leave on your droid before you're captured? I would suggest something more along the lines of "Help me John Simmon. You're my only hope."

True... :-D On a serious note though... what's the current mortality rate in developed Western countries? Seems pretty low given the incredible amount of press.

It is, afaik aside from one kid whose parents didn't seek care until she was really bad noone in the 1st world's died. You might also note that while the CDC is jumping up and down on CNN (to scaremonger themselves a bigger budget); the agency that would have the lead role in fighting a major disease outbreak, the usamriid[^] hasn't said a word.

True... :-D On a serious note though... what's the current mortality rate in developed Western countries? Seems pretty low given the incredible amount of press.

The mortality rate is quite low, < 10% I believe. However the real concern is not the mortality rate, but rather how fasts it spreads. The best measure of this is the daily count of new cases. Fortunately according to WHO, there have been no new confirmed cases in the US for May 1st. This is the first day that this has happened, so that is very good news. Additionally, while there are 11 countries with reported cases, outside of NA, the daily numbers are not increasing.

Is this the message you're going to leave on your droid before you're captured? I would suggest something more along the lines of "Help me John Simmon. You're my only hope."

There's been one death of a small child in the US, as far as I know. I don't get what all the fuss is.

If it bleeds it leads. The golden age (if it ever really existed) when Edward Murrow and Walter Kronkite simply presented the news as news has long since passed. The only difference between now and a century ago is that no one pretended the yellow journalists were actually trying to be objective or non-partisan.
