Yeah. I heard it from a medical profession "muckety muck" (as opposed to some flunkie clinic doc). He stated that the federal government isn't telling us everything (what a shock) about this, and that within 72-96 hours after the WHO announced defcon 5 (which happened yesterday) that Obama would turn out the lights, so to speak. I have no idea what "shut down the country" means, but I would suspect that anything associated with large groups of people co-mingling would be closed. Frankly, I don't see how this could possibly be done, but I figured I'd share what I heard.

I can't imagine a lockdown, but it might be a good idea to postpone larger gatherings. But a shutdown? That's 'good' news for the conspiracy-theory-websites :sigh:

Actually, he won't have to. Once the virus mutates enough and the mortality rate goes to +99%, it will shutdown the country all by itself. :)

True... :-D On a serious note though... what's the current mortality rate in developed Western countries? Seems pretty low given the incredible amount of press.

There's been one death of a small child in the US, as far as I know. I don't get what all the fuss is.

It is, afaik aside from one kid whose parents didn't seek care until she was really bad noone in the 1st world's died. You might also note that while the CDC is jumping up and down on CNN (to scaremonger themselves a bigger budget); the agency that would have the lead role in fighting a major disease outbreak, the usamriid[^] hasn't said a word.

The mortality rate is quite low, < 10% I believe. However the real concern is not the mortality rate, but rather how fasts it spreads. The best measure of this is the daily count of new cases. Fortunately according to WHO, there have been no new confirmed cases in the US for May 1st. This is the first day that this has happened, so that is very good news. Additionally, while there are 11 countries with reported cases, outside of NA, the daily numbers are not increasing.

Is this the message you're going to leave on your droid before you're captured? I would suggest something more along the lines of "Help me John Simmon. You're my only hope."

If it bleeds it leads. The golden age (if it ever really existed) when Edward Murrow and Walter Kronkite simply presented the news as news has long since passed. The only difference between now and a century ago is that no one pretended the yellow journalists were actually trying to be objective or non-partisan.

While there should not be panic, people should remain informed. You sir, are obviously not. > until she was really bad. "She" was a "he" and his parents did not wait until he was really bad. Within 24 hours of the toddler's display of symptoms, he was hospitalized. Despite good care, the child died. As a mom of two little ones myself, my heart goes out to the parents. The child's immune system was already compromised by a sickness already. Tragic circumstances, and the parents should not be blamed. The media, while maybe guilty of overplaying the story (like they do with any story of the day), provides a service to those who do need to know the hows, whys, and wheres of what is going on. Those who have already compromised immune systems are in greater danger ANY time there's a flu, and should take greater care. My little ones do have illnesses which do compromise them when they get other illnesses, such as the flu, and I appreciate being able to turn on the news and see where the latest cases of H1N1 have occurred. If I can change my travel plans in order to give my babies a fighting shot at not contracting an illness, I will do so. A death, especially a child's, is a big deal, no matter what the circumstances. The number of deaths may be low, but if it is your child that dies, the numbers seem too high. Sorry if this comes across harsh, but I have found the attitudes towards that little boy's death to be very callous, here on this board, and other places. Some comments have ranged from "oh well, he was mexican" to yours "the parents didn't seek help in time." Just wrong. blueSprite

I think the latest stats are the regular flu takes about 1% of the people that get it, but the swine flu is taking 6% of the people that get it.

So rather than spend those ten days around people to whom you have already been exposed (at work or school), you'll spend those ten days at the community pool with people to whom you haven't been exposed and maybe get it? Or maybe give it to them if you have it but don't know yet? Maybe we're supposed to stay inside with our blinds closed so we don't see the convoys of military vehicles on the roads. :~ And he does know it's baseball season doesn't he?
