After watching the new Star Trek movie I went to a squib bar and picked a fight. After having my nose broken I wasn't invited to the academy by a respected commander. What did I do wrong?

Not in my book! And I'm female so I get two votes on that. I have tickets to see it in the IMAX theatre in NYC next weekend. Yay! Brief sexual content! Violence! Sci-fi Action!

I used to watch Star Trek as kid and I loved it. Now I can't stop wondering at how stupid the whole concept is. Sci-Fi perse is not stupid, it is rather thought provoking and IMHO it actually contributes to the advancement of technology. Didn't Einstein once say “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.” What pisses me off about the sci-fi genre is that we (humans) assume that we will rule the universe, that we will have technology that in one way or another will beat the extraterrestrial technologies and that sort of mambo jambo. According to the law of probability the existence of extraterrestrial intelligence is not only probable but likely. This means that some of these UFO sightings that we hear about are probably real. This would suggest that the ET civilization already have technology that is so advanced that it allows them to travel between solar systems (according to our knowledge, other then us, there is no intelligent life in our solar system). We can't even manage to land a crew on Mars due to the long distance. If our technology continues to develop at the current rate we are still decades away of creating an interplanetary travel system nevermind inter-stellar. Assuming that the alien technologies advance at the same rate then ours we will never catch up to them. Thus we will never beat them at anything.

Suspension of disbelief is a powerful concept :-) Having fun watching Star Trek (or Tom & Jerry, or Hannah Montana by the way) doesn't imply that we believe it's going to happen, nor that it's even remotely possible, let alone desirable. I myself believe humans will never manage to escape Earth (which itself may be the only sentient-life-carrying-planet in the local cluster.) I nevertheless enjoyed watching the movie.

I love watching Tom and Jerry, Pinky and the Brain is however my favourite. I agree with you that the movie has great entertainment value. It's just that our 'delusions of grandeur' make the plot a bit long in the tooth as it is always the same; Humans battle the aliens and the humans win. The only reason that I would watch a movie like Star Trek is for the special effects and cinematography. If Hollywood (or any other movie mecca) brings out a Sci-Fi movie with an original and thought provoking plot then I'll be first in line to watch it. -"......doesn't imply that we believe it's going to happen, nor that it's even remotely possible, let alone desirable."- We should ask the people that started and/or belong to organizations such as 'The Klingon Language Institute' or the 'Jedi Church' if they agree with the above statement. 390000 People listed their religion as Jedi in the 2001 Census for England and Wales(according to Weekly World News).:omg:    May the Farce be with you. :)

The problem with a movie where the human race loses and is wiped from this side of the universe is that it precludes the possibility of a sequel. I know that Star TWraerks solved this by inventing the prequel, but anyway big studios like big certitudes. BTW, how do you say "may the Force be with you" in Klingon ?
