Portsmouths is Pompey and the origins are lost in the mists of times although there are numerous theories I know Sunderland (the Mackems)is the city and not the team, and it means 'we mack em they attack em'. So this is open to city nicknames too. Where does Geordie originate from and did people from Hartlepool(monkeyhangers) really hang a monkey beleiving it to be a spy?? POMPEY

Another mine flavoured variant was that this was because of the miners lamp that was favoured in the pits around Newcastle, where the Northumbrian miners used lamps designed by George Stephenson as opposed to the Davy lamp.

Is it true that if you laid all the women in the Bigg on a Saturday night from end-to-end that no one would be suprised?

Hartlepool DID hang a monkey thinking it was a French Spy. Luton are The Hatters as it was a town famed for it's Hat industry. (Co-incidentally, Stockport are also know as The Hatters) Watford's nickname is SCUM! (Well it is in Luton anyway).

The Chairboys are Wycombe Wanderers, and I believe it's because of the local furniture industry. My team, Bristol City, is rather boringly called The Robins. I presume it's because of the red shirts but I don't know. Hello, by the way. This is my first post.

Other west country clubs (Swindon and Cheltenham) are called the Robins aswell so I think it might be local thing. Another thing is that a few years ago (before I got banned from Ashton Gate for flicking half a trebor mint in the vicinity of a player) they had mascots running around the pitch dressed in cat outfits which always got in fights with traveling mascots, not sure if they're still there or why.

Wolverhampton Wanderers, or Wolves as they are rather imaginatively known, get their nickname from their habit of scoffing all the pies at away grounds. Once described by a local newspaper as being "like a pack of ravening wolves", and it stuck.

Ah thanks pet! There's lots of possible explanations for the term Geordie most of which stem from being King 'Georges' men in some war against the Scots. My favourite however comes from the fact that early bell-shaped shallow mines that dotted the area were called Geodes, and the men that worked them were called Geoders which later became Geordies. You all know about Gunners, right? For those of you who don't, Arsenal was a team started by factory workers who used to make Guns or Artillery. That's why the name Gunners.
