I have completed my MSc

Congrats! Now that you have this impressive piece of paper, do you feel any smarter? :)

Thanks Jim :-D I already knew I was smart beyond measure (arrogant bastard that I am :-\), but I really wanted the MSc so I can carry on to the PhD. Those plans might have tripped up though because of my Multiple Sclerosis and my father's declining health.

First, I would like to say congrats to you! That's a great achievement. Second, I would ask about your statement that you feel it will make a difference somewhere down the line. In what way do you think? I have been kicking that idea around also, but plan to take some time off after my masters first. The feeling I tend to get from talking to folks is mixed about a PhDs usefulness for anything outside of teaching or research.
Thanks Ray :-D

Ultimately, a PhD is primarily targeted towards research (more so than teaching). This is essentially true anywhere in the world; of course research can be at a university or at some private industrial research group. I am interested in both teaching and research (more into the research TBH). I'm extremely motivated to work on something that would help in my situation. Whether its health informatics or medical image analysis (especially items of a temporal nature). Its rather difficult (but not impossible) for one person to make a break through discovery that would effect a profound affect in a field. This is why I feel that what research I do will help me or someone else achieve a success. If I can move science 1/125th of a hamster forward, then I'll have accomplished a lot. On the teaching front, I fail to see why someone can't be both academic and a good programmer! I find it insulting, as some one that puts his best in both, to meet people on either side of the fence that make fun of the other. At the moment though, I'm confused and I don't know what I'll end up doing. Previously my father received a stent and his health is not what it was, although he is relatively young, 61 today in fact :); He himself has asked me to rethink my PhD, but purely on the grounds that it'll have me half a world away.

Don't be dude, I've come to terms with it seconds after the diagnosis was confirmed. Stercus accidit, that's life. Thankfully, its the most benign type and we all hope it stays that way. Here's the archival link: http://www.codeproject.com/Messages/3009544/Well-we-know-what-it-is.aspx[^] Hence my signature :) Its also a motivator to get into research that will help other research beat this thing. But thanks. It means a lot.

I have just found out that I have complete my Masters of Science in Computer Science with a graduating GPA of 3.88/4.0 making me top of my class! I am pleased :-D Tea and crumpets will be served in the foyer, beer and other alcoholic necessities will be served later in the backroom; simply walk up to the muscled hamster and whisper the password "Chris sent me". I had to share!
