You'll have abuse no matter what you do. I mean, that's sort of the whole topic of this sub-thread, right? ;-)

Many of the Mexican ex-pats here have learned enough of the local language to get by... and we've adopted the rest of the differences, in our usual ham-fisted manner. ;-)

This must be the fabled proof that Australia's gun laws work since the crime wasn't gun related.

I doubt it - even in Sydney none of the Indian guys we work with has ever mentioned a problem. As with any city, there's such a thing as being in the wrong place at the wrong time - on your own, late at night, ANYONE, regardless of race, becomes a target for scumbags !! (*1) Would I turn it into a racist thing if the same happened to me in India - lets say Mumbai ? no .. I'd be just another fool tourist who flashed some money/jewelery around and attracted the unhealthy attention of individuals, or who went to possibly an area of town that wasnt healthy. Does this paper equally report incidents of foreign (regardless of skin colour/race) stabbings in India ? If they dont then they could be construed as being just as racist as the poor chap in the article. Its just way too easy to cite race as a reason, sorry (*1) being of robust stature with a carefully calculated 'dont f#ck with me' demeanor means this usually doesnt apply to me, but I still don't push my luck 'g'

There is no such thing as a bad question. There is lazy delivery, and not attempting to use available resources prior to bothering people, even when finding it involves such hard processes as read further down the page you are asking question on, or in using google. It is never the question that is bad, it is the intent that can be bad. If I hear someone asking in a way that makes me think they are trying to learn, I will spend a lot of time helping ( trying to, as my explanations are not always clear). I have known short bus people who want to learn, and are willing to stretch to learn basics, who I will give time to. I have seen PhD candidates who are just looking for the answer, and are pinging me because they think their time is more important than mine, so they won't research it. I have worked with guys who just want you to do they're work for them because they are just dead lazy. Just give me the one who is willing to work and learn, who is trying to do something they are interested in. Even if they are not the sharpest knife, they will cut the best. /rant

I am not sure if this is attack have racial background, is it? Just a note: The condition of Indians/(Asians maybe?) in CP always gets my attention. If you look at the messages, if any ask a beginner question and their profile shows that they are from india, Many heroes here would slap them with go Check google or I will not do your homeowrk/ Stop taking our jobs! kind of crap. No, I am not indian, but I am just saying what I always notice:) I am sure , my post will be getting 1 votes.

I don't think its Indians alone who get slapped for not doing their own homework. However it may appear this way because firstly a disproportionate number of Comp Sci students are Indian and secondly because their command of English is generally better than say Chinese, Vietnamese or Indonesians students, then they have the confidence to actually ask questions.

I don't think so. Well no more than anywhere else. I would say its the governments fault. You can take this with a grain of salt or just put it in the 'he's full of it' bin but I think the police have a really really hard time controlling teenagers in this country lately. Seems every teenager can get away with literally murder as they all know they will have their records wiped when they turn 18. When I grew up in Australia you where scared to death of the police. If they caught you doing something wrong you copped it, literally. If I was to call a police officer a 'pig' in the streets I would be taken to the nearest alleyway and promptly dealt with. Those days are gone and these little rats know it. Nowadays parents immediately go for the lawyers if the police even look at their 'little angels' sideways. Add to this the fact that Australia is going through an 'ice' crisis at the moment as well. I wouldn't travel on a train after dark for love or money. As to this attack being racially motivated I would have to disagree, We do have a hell of a lot of racism in this country don't get me wrong I wouldn't argue that fact at all. But from the facts that I know of about this attack I'd be more inclined to say 'w rong place, wrong time'. Trains in both Sydney and Melbourne are not the safest places at night. I've been lucky to escape several attacks myself and once witnessed two police officers attacked by a gang of 20+ teenagers. To isolate this as as racism without seeing all the facts is just political grandstanding. Do they even mention how many other people are attacked on the railways? But you might want to take my views as tainted, I have spent too much time in places such as Kings Cross and add to that I have been stabbed twice and shot once.
