This is to put everyone on notice that my website was hacked several times in the last 2 days. I made a list of everyone--email,name, website, etc-- who posted a negative comment about me and I have turned that list over to my attorney this morning with instructions to turn that list over to the F.B.I. I have requested that my attorney file a formal complaint with the Computer Crimes Division of the F.B.I. in Washington, to investiget the destruction of my website. I have further instructed my attorney to hire a private investigation company that specializes in such crimes to determine who did it and to file a CIVIL lawsuit against that party or parties for $20 million in damages. You have simply created a problem for everyone on codeproject and I am sure they do not apprecaite your actions that have made them suspects. Sincerely, William SerGio Bill SerGio, The Infomercial King

But bill, is litigation an adequate form of defense? perhaps you should consider securing your website more. Or doing less stuff that triggers "negative comment[s] about [you]". And, since not everyone comes from the united states, your civil suit is a bit worthless. And you really think that the FBI should give up investigating homicide, kidnapping, terrorism etc to spare resource to catch some teenage cyberpunk who hacked your website? Sorry, but your post just seemed far too ridiculous for a friday afternoon. Signature space for rent. Apply by email to....

Actually, they have good reason.,.. ever seen the movie "Wag the Dog"? What if the FBI wants to make a 90 minute war movie that they will pass off as a real event and use it to cover something up, or as an excuse to go to war, or something? Then they'll need Mr. SerGio. :-D There are three types of people in this world: those who can count, and those who can't.

I don't think anybody from CP is at all likely to be the villian in this case, but just because I think it doesn't make it true. :( John Smith wrote: Its like you are talking as if you are guilty*, putting your hands up and saying sorry to him Re-read what I posted. I put a lot of thought into the actual wording. I can sympathise with whats happened. I wouldn't want it to happen to me (if I had a website - must get round to creating one), but I was just saying that I think he is going in the wrong direction and doing it the wrong way. If he wants to prosecute the offenders. Good. If he wants to investigate. Good. But threatening/assuming guilt of CP members was not the way to go - negatibve comment messages here on the boards does not mean guilt. He should have kept that knowledge to himself and done his investigation before throwing accusations around. * I am not guilty- Honest guv! from http://www.pbs.org/empires/romans/life/life3.html: The Plebeian and freed population of Rome vastly outnumbered the Equestrian and Patrician classes, and their lives were much harder. Many had no jobs, little money and little food. Augustus, realizing that the masses of average Romans had to be kept both fed and happy enough to remain peaceful, began the system of patronage we now refer to as "bread and circuses." He gave the people food — by means of grain distribution and legislation of food prices — and free entertainment such as chariot races, gladiators, and lavish spectacles in amphitheaters and the Circus Maximus. so... to put that into today's terms: the US government isn't doing much for the economy right now, but they're giving us plenty of lavish spectacles, at least. -c

If you were hacked then I assume you have logs that will show exactly who it was, when the attack occured and what happened. We get attempted hacks in the order of dozens per minute, ranging from port scans, known vulnerability attacks to brute force password guessing against our FTP server (which is hilarious since it's not actually turned on). Before you go ballistic make sure you're not just crying wolf. cheers, Chris Maunder

Actually the government can do a lot. But not really via any direct means. The economy is like a huge black box with 10,000 knobs. Unfortunately, the government can only tweak 100 of those knobs. The biggest problem is that people expect the government to be able to twirl a magic wand and everyone wakes up the next morning with everything fixed. We are only now getting into the time where the Bush administration's actions (or inactions) are starting to effect the economy. For the most part we are still suffering from Clinton's inability to take any action. But I can't say that Bush is doing any better. He has become singled minded (IMHO). But then again, you can't really blame Bush or Clinton for the scope of the current mess. Sure, Clinton's government agencies were woefully inadequate when it comes to monitoring business. But how much does a president really control that mess. Sure, he can place a different moron at the helm, but a ship floundering of a reef is still floundering regardless of the captain. putting some teeth into the laws regarding accounting practices might help. and, i can think of better uses for a few hundred billion dollars than setting up camp in Iraq for the next 10 years. -c

Can't argue with those. But I still find myself very undecided about Iraq. Regretfully, I feel I will be one of those who will have to see more direct proof, or god forbid another direct attack by Iraq (and I'm an atheist). 20 M$ in damage?? You must be nuts. Anyway, this is America nowadays.... Actually, I was thinking more in terms that the only thing government really has control over (economy-wise) is taxes and regulation. Reduce both of these across the board, and the economy grows -- raise both, and the economy shrinks. Unfortunately, the effects of economic policies are usually not immediate, and sometimes carry over from one Congress / President's administration into another, and most people don't realize this. For example, if President X lowers taxes all through his administration while the economy sucks, X will still be blamed for a bad economy unless the effects of those cuts are seen. But when President Y is elected and inherits the benefits of President X's policies, President Y will get the credit. Implementing a sales tax only system would remove many of these effects AND a lot of the politics about the economy, since sales taxes are self-limiting (which is what the US had for many, many years). If sales taxes get too high, people buy less, and the tax is lowered. If the tax is too low, people take advantage of this and buy more. Could the US ever get back to a sales tax only system? I wish, but I doubt it, without a massive collapse and getting the politians (from both parties) out of the government. Which brings me to another question -- what is a politian (or what does a politian become) when they're not in power? A windbag? ;P "Our contest is not only whether we ourselves shall be free, but whether there shall be left to mankind an asylum on earth for civil and religious liberty." --Samuel Adams
