I keep being irritated by the difference in the media coverage between the death of a museum guard killed by a racist and the death of a soldier killed by a racist. It appears that because some racists like to masquerade as being conservatives who want to kill blacks and Jews while others like to pretend they are inspired by their God to kill whites there is a wide dichotomy in the amount of interest your average CNN/CBS/NBC anchor evinces in the story. Indeed, I'm beginning to think that the D.C. killers Naval service during WWII is getting more air-time than was devoted to reporting on the assasination of a PFC who was about to head off to Afghanistan. Here's a clue for Katie, and all the rest: Racists killers aren't left-wing or right-wing; they're sick, twisted, paranoid murderers. Period. So you can fracking well stop choosing up sides.

Yet this 'right wing' guy who shot up the museum was a neo con hater and apprently a member of mensa... Sounds sort of libertarian to me...

Well you know if he is white, right-wing, or a so called Christan they will certainly emphasis those points and drill it into your head. That is why being white, right, and strait makes you an extremist.

I hear what you're saying. The victims in either case are just as dead. The killers are still killers. I think there's some value in asking why they became killers. What is it about their worldview that made them want to do it? Is there anything we can learn from that so it doesn't happen again? The problem is when the focus shifts from the killer as an individual to the group that they belong to. As an example, take the Islamic militant terrorists. They probably wouldn't be terrorists if they didn't belong to the group and yet not all Islamic or Muslim people are terrorists, so membership alone isn't what makes them terrorists. It's probably this set of factors: their personal lives are difficult, they don't have something to work for or much hope (nothing to lose) and they belong to a group of very-religious people who have similar lives. The religious group feeds off each other to become a movement and they lash out at the people they hold responsible for their hard lives. Thus, the key to stopping it is not to fight against the religion, but to try to bring stability to the lives of those people (and/or their countries) and to oppose the religion becoming a violent movement. I've noticed that people who go on shooting rampages have often recently lost their jobs. "Although he left no suicide note and gave no explanation for the killings, investigators said Ratzmann was on the verge of losing his job. It was unclear what prompted the slayings." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7167861/page/2/[^] "He was also distraught that he had lost his job at a Shop Vac manufacturing plant in Endicott, N.Y., which the company closed last year." http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2009-04-04-newyork-shooting-saturday_N.htm[^] "Hawkins recently broke up with his girlfriend and lost his job at McDonald's." http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,315441,00.html[

I think that people lash out when they feel powerless. Of course the economic problems we'e had this last year have made a lot of people feel that way and only a handful have become violent. My guess is that the group think makes the rage seem respectable, even noble, but the rage or hatred predates and causes the search for the group. I just wish NBC et al didn't react with a hohum a muslim killed a white soldier while pissing it their pants because a white guy killed a black guard. And I wish they'd focus on the victims not the criminals. Making them famous will make them into role models for some.

So disastisfied people are more likely to kill than satisfied people are? Did you figure that out all by yourself? The point isn't why they kill, the point is the obvious disparity in responses to the various acts. Of course disgruntled extremists kill, that is to be expected. You will never so perfectly design a society that will eliminate those kinds of acts. But what is not to be expected is a mass media that so blatantly promotes a narrative that serves a world view they champion while ignoring those which they do not. What I have noticed is that when it is obvious that the killers are promoting the same narrative as liberals, which was true in two of these cases, we suddenly have a debate about 'oh lets not call it left vs right' but when it is clearly a case of someone killing for a reason more associated with the so called right, as in the Tiller case, there is no such debate. Its all 'damn the conservatives' all day long. Liberals never examine the consequencies of their own rhetoric.

Yes, what I wrote was a obvious. I went off on a bit of a tangent too, because I like to think about things in general terms and then apply that thinking back to the specific situations. I should have said that the killing of the museum guard and the killing of the soldiers were both racist gun rampages.
Stan Shannon wrote:

I tried to make a point in my previous post that it's extremists who are the problem, not conservatives or liberals. Tiller's killer is associated with the right, but the vast majority of right-wing people are not extremists. Killing for a left-wing agenda is wrong too.

You're talking about Fox News here, right? ;) Seriously though, there's a lot of biased reporting and way too much editorializing in the news these days. If it gets any worse, there will be a line of bouncing cheerleaders behind the news anchors.

I think you need to re-examine your life. Three thousand people died that day, probably all of them better people than you. For some people their apparently ordinary day turned into a decision as to whether they wanted to burn to their deaths, or jump to their deaths. You need to grow the fuck up and accept reality, or become another Gene Ray.
