It looks like my bad luck with phone companies is not over yet. About two months ago, I agreed to "upgrade" my phone/internet services with Verizon. I was using Verizon FiOS but the sales person said the "upgrade" will have better speed, etc. Plus, the phone (US and Canada) and internet services package is only $69.99/month. I was concerned with my wife's international calls and asked them to keep the same long distance company for such calls. I used to get a separate bill from the long distance company for international calls. They said no problem. Now I am getting a bill from Verizon with $532.70 charges for calls to China. It turns out they removed my old long distance company and charged me $6.55 per minute for calls to China. The old company charges $0.04 per min, by the way. The rest of the story should be familiar to all of you: call customer support, hold over 30 minutes, talk to a real person who doesn't have any authority to handle this, call again, hold again, get transferred to someone who has authority but don't care what you want, ... Any idea what to do, besides abandon the home phone and use cell phone only?

Other options include coming up with a way to make it into a Verizon Math scale internet scandal and shame them into treating their craniorectal impaction, or using a 3rd party voip phone service.

I wish, it's from another site a while back.   I don't recall if this was my suggestion for the problem or someone elses, there were several at one point but this is the only one that stuck with me.

Post your problem on a blog, then spam everyone one can think of that's involved with this debacle about your blog post. Go public as much as possible, and you'll get results! :) Marc

The other common term is an anal-cranial inversion. Edit: Forgot to add, for which there should be an emoticon, but isn't.

My other signature is witty and insightful.

I think in this case it's not the pricing that's an issue but the unauthorised switching of part of the phone connection. This practice is called slamming in the UK and is not permitted. Is there a communications watchdog in the US that could resolve your issue. Did you sign a new contract that said they would swap the international calls over. You could also contact the provider that you should be using and see if they want to take the fight on after all they will be missing revenue from this fraud.

Yes, slamming is illegal in the US, too. If Verizon won't help, check with your state utilities board or the FCC.
