Morning, Just what the Hell is wrong with this government? Great idea, let's give the last remaining world-class institution (the BBC) in this land a good shoeing. I despair. Deep breaths - sorry, perhaps I should head over to the soapbox.

    Regards, Rob Philpott.

It's awful, ITV doesn't have enough (any, well, maybe Harry Hill) decent programs to fill one channel, let alone 4! I propose ITV2-4 are axed immediately, that'll help them out with costs if money's the issue.

Well of course if ITV made better programs that people actually wanted to watch then there would be no problem! And why should the BBC be made to pay. It is like forcing Coke to give money to Pepsi, because Pepsi isn't so popular. If ITV goes under then so be it, there are other companies that would like the chance to run a national TV Service. The BBC over the years has given us Dr Who, Spooks, Life on Mars, All the Classic Serials, All the Attenborough things, it has a world class reputation for making programs that, quite frankly, no-one in the world could make, and simply because of the way it is funded. Could you see ITV or Sky making something like Life on Earth or The Ascent of Man? I don't think so. It also has a world class news-gathering system, and is highly regarded. Screw ITV, if they want to make rubbish TV for idiots, let them. Apart from Corrie, what do they got? Nothing.

I wish they'd just scrap the thing. Hopefully at least with sharing it out there'll be more reason to do so in future. Personally I can't stand any of the BBC or ITV channels. There's only really Virgin 1 I watch at the moment (though I'd also get paramount, sci-fi and kerrang if it wasn't for the 12-month minimum term with sky, etc).

And don't get me started on the monthly 50p tax on phone lines. It's estimated to make £120M a year, and the cost of high-speed broadband to everyone estimated at £5bn, so what's the point except to piss off phone users?

Also, to be fair, there is that Ladette to Lady program which is good for an eyeful of young tear away Australian lasses. BUT, it has commercials in it, so should fund itself. 3.5% is hardly a massive amount to hand over, but I think it sets a dangerous precedent and could pave the way for the demise of the BBC. And that truly would be tragic.

There's little point to any new Government policy these days. Perhaps Alistair Darling did the sums.

There's no law that states everyone in the country must legally buy coke or not drink anything at all, even water, though, that's the difference.

There is no law that says you have to watch TV. Yet, and here is the rub, should you decide not to watch TV you do not pay for the BBC, for there would be no license fee, yet you would still be paying for ITV as the cost of the advertising is built into the prices you pay for products you buy. So, which is fairer?

And that's their problem. I watched X-men 2 with my kids the other week - Saturday night, first terrestrial showing (I think), and every single ad break was filled with ads for ITV channels themselves. They clearly hadn't sold one commercial slot. Which looks a lot like like a dead business to me. Jeez - they don't even have Melvyn to pretend they do any kind of real programming any more. Remember World in Action - stuff like that? It's easy to forget it used to be worth turning over once in a while!

Monday nights were ITV nights, World in Action followed by The Sweeney!

Yes, and something strangely alluring about the Welsh accent too.

Then ITV is pointless. That was the only good programme being broadcasted
