Well of course if ITV made better programs that people actually wanted to watch then there would be no problem! And why should the BBC be made to pay. It is like forcing Coke to give money to Pepsi, because Pepsi isn't so popular. If ITV goes under then so be it, there are other companies that would like the chance to run a national TV Service. The BBC over the years has given us Dr Who, Spooks, Life on Mars, All the Classic Serials, All the Attenborough things, it has a world class reputation for making programs that, quite frankly, no-one in the world could make, and simply because of the way it is funded. Could you see ITV or Sky making something like Life on Earth or The Ascent of Man? I don't think so. It also has a world class news-gathering system, and is highly regarded. Screw ITV, if they want to make rubbish TV for idiots, let them. Apart from Corrie, what do they got? Nothing.

This is a monumentally stupid idea, thought up by monumentally stupid people. I don't want to get into SoapBox territory but what this really is is an attempt to get the British Bucket Company to toe the line. An extremely transparent attempt to whittle away their independence. It wasn't meant to be transparent, of course, which just emphasises the stupidity of the proposers. My £0.02p

Having never seen any British TV on TV, I can't vouch for their current content, but ITV made Mind Your Language* which was very popular in India. Of course, the BBC had its own popular stuff like Yes Minister. Both these were telecast in India as well as remade in Hindi for Indian audiences. * Don't feel sorry for it or say it is inappropriate, on "our" behalf.

There is no law that says you have to watch TV. Yet, and here is the rub, should you decide not to watch TV you do not pay for the BBC, for there would be no license fee, yet you would still be paying for ITV as the cost of the advertising is built into the prices you pay for products you buy. So, which is fairer?

Well it's up to individual companies whether they wish to advertise on ITV or not, there's a choice. There's no law saying you have to watch TV but if I want to watch the sci-fi channel I have to pay something like £13 a month (can't remember the exact amount) to the BBC to go into content I have no interest in. Along with that I keep hearing of attempts to extend the tax onto computers and mobile phones, just because the BBC want to offer their services over those mediums and think everyone should be forced to buy those as well.

But you generally need a phone line to get internet access anyway! There's mobile internet but it's too unreliable in my experience. The promised 2 mbits also isn't much compared to what's available abroad. Plus the bottleneck will probably end up being on the main lines that aren't being upgraded as more home users start watching streaming TV etc. My connection at home is already supposed to be 2 mbits but the actual speed is nowhere near that, and the phone line is all crackly. But it's provided by BT - another great british company *jk*

A mate of mine works in the XXXXXXXX (kept out for mate's job safety) department of the BBC. The entire division he works in is going to me outsourced to a foreign country, losing 100's of British jobs. I don't really want to HAVE to pay a license fee that won't even go to British workers. ITV or the foreign workers don't warrant any part of my fee, screw 'em.
