So far, 7 has the speed and less interference (vs. Vista). With some security tools you have complete peace of mind on XP. Lets see how the final score will be when 7 is released. With my new and expensive Dell Precision workstation, I was hoping for a new level of productivity. But now, I am spending a whole day, just changing security on files! Best regards, Paul.

Paul, I had the same problem when I went from XP to Weven and I tried a lot of different things and finally gave up but your post peeked my interest. Anyway to make a long story short I downloaded a utility that seems to work for individual files, haven't tried it on directories but should work. Worth a shot if your still having problems. I also like it because it works from the System context menu. Mike

Hello Mike, Long time, no see :) Thanks for the input. I just can't understand why MS will do a modern OS expecting it to run on the latest of graphics hardware, but no expecting anyone to use external hard drive. I am currently waiting for Shog's recommendation to complete (Vista is changing the security on every file on that hard drive), and see what will happen. You did you provide any further information on the utility, or where to download it. Best regards, Paul.

I just can't understand why MS will do a modern OS expecting it to run on the latest of graphics hardware, but no expecting anyone to use external hard drive. You think so? The jobless/economy is having more effect than age these days. Even if you feel you have a secured job, you cannot close your eyes/ears on cases around you. Thanks for the link. It is just a registry file, it makes it more secured anyway :) I just visited the http://www.hq4thmarinescomm.com site. You created it? it seems to have a lot of gradient and I was thinking...that might be the reason you created the gradient tool. :-D

I am getting frustrated now. It is taken me weeks to move to Vista, but now it is all frustrations. I have this big USB external hard drive, which I use to store all my data on my old PC running XP. I have now connected this to the new PC running Vista, and Vista is refusing to allow me to save my projects. I googled and found that even though I run as administrator, I still have to add my user account and give it administrator level right to be able to freely access the drive. I did and it took about 6 hours to change the security on each file on the drive. But, now here I am, it is still not working. I have already disabled the UAC, is there anything else to disable on this silly OS so that I can have my freedom to work? I cannot even view CHM (help files) on this drive, but drag them to the desktop and it is viewable - what is this whole mess? I moved to Vista SP2 on my new PC so that I could update to Windows 7, I do not know what to do now. Please help. I care less about aero or whatever, I just want to work. :confused: Best regards, Paul.

Format it with an older format, such as FAT32. It doesn't store annoying "security" details, it just stores bytes. So it should just work.

Can you still read/write in XP? If not, you could well be stuffed. I hope that, you did resolve the problem and if so, for goodness sake do some sort of backup, even if it is only into a folder on your new PC. :)

Are you nuts? you're spending hours fiddling with access rights and settings on some data you don't consider important enough to have a backup? get serious, go buy a new external disk, format it on Vista, load a few files, check all is fine on all Windows versions you use, then copy all files. :)

Not as expected or partly so far. I am now trying to see if this is restricted to some folders. The security change on the files completed, with one access denied error, it was on the system volume, so I do not know why it was trying to change the access of that.

I will have to check, I do not think there will be any issue (just moved it from the XP).

Thanks. Yes, there is enough space on the new PC, and I was hoping to finally copy the contents of this drive and leave the original as backup. But not completely done with the old PC yet, I wish to use this externally - but now it seems I cannot :confused: Thanks for the remainder, I will backup soon. Best regards, Paul.

Yeah, I was doing something silly - nice you did not say it! :) I have just recently bought this external drive, copied the contents of another external drive that collapsed, packed other contents on my old PC, so that I could gradually transfer them to my new PC. It is a transition state, but I still needed to code :(( Best regards, Paul.
