From the Insider: Top Indian CEO: Most American Grads Are ‘Unemployable’[^] "Many American grads looking to enter the tech field are preoccupied with getting rich, Vineet said. They're far less inclined than students from developing countries like India, China, Brazil, South Africa, and Ireland to spend their time learning the "boring" details of tech process, methodology, and tools--ITIL, Six Sigma, and the like."

He's wrong. Students in developing countries are also concerned with getting rich. It's just that the "rich" bar is a lot lower for them than in the US. For instance, $5 would make some of them quite wealthy in comparison to their countrymen.

I don't think 'getting rich' is the be-all and end-all of every country. Prestige in your career (or even having a career), or simply supporting your family in a comfortable way are enough in some countries.

I don't think it is restricted to Yanks. I'm surprised, however, not to have seen complaints from some of our Hibernian cousins at being classed as a developing country.

Sure. These are the ones filling up our forums with PLZZZZ URGENNNT and co. Other developers are busy coding, and have no free time for studying processes while waiting for a solution from a forum.

Is it really about getting rich? Or, is it about being unwilling to be a codemonkey and gopher?

These are the bootcamp graduates. I've dealt with companies that uses these as training methods and they are little better off than someone with zero training. Plus once they complete these worthless courses they are often sent to follow and be a gopher for a 'senior' who had completed the course and mentoring program a year or two earlier. All in all, it seems like their goal is to put a warm body in a seat and maximise their billable hours.

I might have maybe agreed until I got to the "Six Sigma" bit - who uses that? It's a management strategy, it has nothing to do with software design right? And after glancing over at the Wikipedia definition of ITIL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_Technology_Infrastructure_Library[^] ) I don't think, as a software developer, that I'd be too interested in it either! That might be the issue - this guy sounds like he wants IT drones, people who would do more of the boring maintenance kind of work, as opposed to actual software developers. That might account for why he can't "find" anyone here in the states, maybe there's more interest in software development as opposed to IT work? Neither of which has anything to do with getting rich - you could pay me 3 times what I'm making now and I still wouldn't be very thrilled to take the job, because it's even *more* boring that what I currently do!

I wonder how employable his country's denizens would be if the large countries that are currently supporting their employability stopped.

A company I used to work for tried implementing ITIL. I found the next ticket out of there quickly. It's useless. Most of it is common sense release process like don't just throw code into production without having someone look at it first etc. If you NEED people who've learned these things in a class I think you'll be out of business fairly quickly...

It's not the people who brought us WPF that are the problem. The problem is that things like WPF and Visual Studio are being designed for people who post the 'PLZ HLP! SND THE CODZS!' messages.

That was my thought too. Apparently the lack of global understanding is a problem for both US tech folk and Indian CEOs ...

The same generalization is equally untrue in the US. For instance, I've been a programmer for 30 years. I like doing it, and have no interest in being any type of manager (beyond being a team lead). This prevents me from making the "big bucks". I'm happy with my 5-figure salary, which is significantly short of being a 6-figure salary. Besides all that, I was just being a smart-ass. I contemplate mentioning the use of elephant teeth and shiny rocks as viable currency in India, but I was already kinda bored with the whole thing. :)

What's really scary is that the MSDN forums are now RIFE with posts that start out with the phrase, "I'm not a programmer, but I need help..."
