My thinking has shifted to trying for a one-word name that communicates my general philosophy for the business, rather than 'something solutions', or 'something services'. I want to go a little unconventional, more like the advertising companies name themselves, e.g. BlueMoon, WetPaint, ... Hmm, Dave's advice this morning about explaining the problem is really working.

Fair enough but you may have to spend more on advertising so potential customers will associate that unconventional and possibly unrelated name with your products.

I'm the product, and I'm looking for in the direction of networking and word of mouth for advertising. Initially.

I'm trying to come up with a business name, and wouldn't mind some feedback. I thought of Ordered Software, and it has various merits, but it's very grey. I'm trying to stick along the lines of ordered, as my delivered code is normally very tight, i.e. crystalline, i.e. ordered, but that form limits my domain name, so I'm considering Crystallus. Thoughts on the name?

How about "Mando"? It's latin meaning "to commit, entrust, order, command" plus it still has the red-blooded man thing going on.

And if someone puts that phrase into Google, the chances of gettting your site are... ?

Better, although it would make me think of someone selling crystals who is based in the US.

If they put in Ordered Agility though, the chances are very good.

I like the meaning, maybe the word needs time to grow on me a bit.

In all likelyhood that would get a few hundred erroneous hits from gamers looking for Ph4t L3wt, and you would get some incredible volume of spam (or wannabe fan mail).

I've actually started leaning away from 'software'. Not because I'm not software, but because I'm trying for a bang-for-buck one-word wonder. :)

If you have to explain the name to people, it doesn't work. Crystallus doesn't shout "Software" at me.

An important consideration in naming a company is making sure people can spell it. Seriously (and speaking from experience.) The best names are either pretty obvious (Microsoft) or an abstraction (Apple, Exxon.) While it may be cute to have names with meanings, it ends up being a distraction and nobody cares. (You may think people will be dying of curiosity about the origins of your company name and when they find out they'll go "oooh". They won't and won't.)
