Seems to be. Otherwise you will never be asked in a interview for a marketing post: "Have you ever used Twitter in a Marketing campaign?". I had bunch of people follow me. But I did not follow them in return unless I found that the made interesting tweets which are of interest to me. I think it works best when you make good intelligent spam free posts, you follow people who might be interested in what you are trying to market and they follow you.

I'm sorry, but this sounds like high school and worrying about who's cool and who's not, which lunch table you sit at, etc. It was pretty stupid in high school, and it's got to be doubly or trebly(?) stupid now. On top of that, none of this is real! At least on open mic night, it's really you onstage, and there may (or may not) be real, live people in the room. This is just a string of characters delivered via email from some electronic host. No one really "knows" who is on the other end!

I set up a profile last week, and was immediately followed by a dozen or so people who are folling x thousand and are followed by x thousand. I think the idea is that they follow you so that you feel obligated to follow them, thus running up their "followed by" numbers. But do those numbers really pay off? My impression was that it's much like an open mic night at a bar. Such things are usually done on nights when there's no business, and so the only people you have in the room are a dozen musicians and their girlfriends. They completely ignore who's playing and are only interested in their own 15 minutes, so even if the room is full, it's much like playing to an empty room (which is why I never played open mic gigs).

Although you can do it. I don't want to use SMS for twitter. I don't want to pay for the junk messages first of all and it does not appeal to me. Twitter is a website and there are several tools to use it and that's what I do.

Using Twitter to launch a restaurant.[^] After using twitter for a while, I have the following conclusions:- 1. If you follow updates from certain people you do learn a lot. I have gained good bit from Guy Kawasaki's tweets as he posts about Entrepreneurship, sales, marketing, funding etc which interests me these days. 2. It is a good marketing tool. I am sure there is a lot of junk on it but the trick is to properly shield yourself from the junk. My only concern is that it might be a bubble that may burst all of a sudden.

Namaste (or Vannacum) Sri Rama, An interesting thread. I have yet to Twitter, and I don't think I ever will. The idea of it, to me, is equivalent to letting a horde of strangers be all able to talk in terse sentences directly into my ears any time they want. Yes, I'm an old crank now, I guess. Remember when people said, “Why would I go to a web site when newspapers and magazines come to my house, I can see people in person or talk to them on the phone, get driving instructions by looking at my AAA map, and buy books by going to the mall?” That’s where we are right now." The key difference is your ability pic the strangers and pick what you want to listen. It is no different than all the numerous websites out there. People are making noise everywhere on Internet but you chose to visit this site because it happens to give you some value. In the same way you pick and chose what you want to follow on twitter.
