The Carolinas are nice - not as oppressive as Florida. Low cost of living and decent quality of life. I've lived in New Hampshire all my life and southern Virginia/Northern North Carolina are the only other places I'd consider living.

It sounds like lots of people consider the Carolinas as a nice place to live. Thanks for your response.

Thanks for your response Dan. > $300k for a starter house sounds a little like Australia. I wonder what rents are like. Obviously it would depend on where you are. Here in Switzerland there is definitely a rental culture. In fact most people rent, and a basic home will set you back at least a mil.

Significantly less, but I don't have any idea of an actual dollar value. They didn't go stupid like house prices did a few years ago.

My wife and I are entertaining the possibility of relocating to the US for a while. We are looking for a warm climate, near the ocean, and low crime. If anyone has any suggestions or recommendations regarding a nice area, I’d appreciate hearing about it.

Something else to consider, that I don't think has been brought up. Culturally/politically the US is well to the right of every other first world country. Our more conservative parts (eg most of the south/midwest excepting towns with a large number of internal migrants) might not be a comfortable fit.

Good point. Yes, I was under the impression that the east coast has a greater liberal contingent. It’s hard to gauge these things without witnessing first hand.

It was that bad before California became a socialist police state 20 years ago, and could still be considered part of the United States. It can't be better now...

Depends on whether or not you're in a city. Out between the cities (Tonopah, AZ to the Palm Springs area) it's 75 MPH and if you don't go 90MPH you get run over by trucks.

Anywhere on the southern east or west coast for the weather. Just put your house on very high stilts for the low crime factor.

What percentage of people would you say ride scooters in the city?

I don't know which city you mean, more do in L.A. When I lived in L.A. I rode a motorcycle.

Daniel, Where are you relocating from? I moved to the USA from the UK in 1988 and lived in S California.   In 2002 I moved up to Sacramento (the capital city of CA) and prefer it - it has seasons, like the UK.   Tree-leaves go red and fall off each year, and it gets cool enough for sweats.   But summers get up to 100 deg + (F, not C) When I worked in UK, I worked with salesmen who sold "Pertec" computers.   When I came here (on a holiday visa), I "volunteered" at Pertec as the SW QA Dept Manager.   Pertec sponsored me to a Work Visa.   I married my penpal and had to go to Holland on business, and was not allowed back into the US afterwards ... long story short, I was obviously an intended immigrant (job, house and wife in US, no job, house or wife in UK), but Work Visa is non-immigrant.   I stayed in UK til we could get me back on a "humanitarian parole" and I quickly got my green card.   More recently, I've become a naturalized citizen.
