What is your dream project?

But you neglected to mention what that dream application would be! That was the point of the question.
Richard, you are just fishing for ideas, think up your own.

If someone suddenly offered to finance you a couple of million dollars for you to create your dream application, what would that project be? It has to be something you've always wanted to work on but never had the time or resources. For me, I think it would be the ultimate suite of reverse engineering tools.
I'd like to make the next generation OS that would be a blend of Second Life with Linux. My avatar in my house on my desktop. I can walk into my hard drive and check out files hanging on the walls, maybe fly up and grab one to edit. Imagine going into your memory in a 3D room to see whats in that memory location. Of course I could have company over from people who have the same OS. We can chat or whatever like in Second Life. Maybe even build something. You can also login to Second Life or any of the Opensim public grids. The entire operating system is built from the ground up just for this for maximum speed. I can't even imagine how far this could go. With build capabilities like Second Life and actually even more because it's an OS the Shell and Desktop would just be crazy and endless.

Well, get right on that. There's no time like now. Chop chop!

A long time ago someone sent me some art work which was pretty run of the mill nude pictures. I noticed that they were professionally done and had good lighting. Being the sick puppy curious person I am I started playing around in Photoshop and by applying some filters managed to "expose" the veins in the models breast with enough clarity to see where they were covered by her implants. The original image was altered so that the person was reduced to a series of contour lines, but the veins were distinctly clear. I showed this to a lady friend and her immediate reaction was that this may be able to be used to give an early warning for breast cancer. The theory is that tumors need blood supplies and by detecting them you get a picture of where a tumor is developing by comparing photos over time and mapping where there were new blood supplies being built. I thought about it and think it would be a great thing to be able to distribute something like this to health departments in developing countries for free or at modest cost, making it affordable to provincial health clinics in rural areas. Some ideas are just too valuable to be used to make a profit. Now this is no simple process and the AI engine could probably be used for a doctoral dissertation (way over my head) so I would need some young energetic beautiful minds (with no negative connotation intended) so I plan to make this my retirement project. The model I did my original work on was whiter than white (not that I believed for one second that she was a natural blond). In my experience most women in tribal areas have dark skin, my wife, of Khmer ancestry, included. I will need to experiment with infrared to detect the heat signature of the arteries and veins. I can do the graphics but will need significant assistance matching photos taken over time with slightly different focal lengths and possibly differing lighting conditions. I will approach some universities in Thailand with a proposal and, additionally, see if I can get some grant money from philanthropic organizations, to finance a pilot project. If things work out I will then approach camera manufactures to see if they are willing to donate, or supply at cost, cameras and lighting equipment. It would be great publicity after all. Feel good name exposure. Well that is my dream project. Hopefully I can at least get it started before moving on to my next life cycle.

The money is not the point. I'm just asking what you would like to work on if you didn't have to worry about doing it to support yourself.

I'm working on it. I've been designing it in my mind since the 90's.

Man I was hoping someone would have jumped all over the idea and I could've downloaded me a copy of it tomorrow :-D

I'd build an IDE in the cloud that spreads compiling over many machines, giving instant compilations over huge solutions.

There's an advertiser on CP that already sells that. They call it "IncrediBuild".

So you are meaning a software app, right? Actually, I really wouldn't do anything in software. I've pretty much decided that making software applications sucks. However, there is one thing I'd like to do: something like a cross between Star Trek's computer AI (Next Generation) and Minority Report. Marc

An application combined with affordable personal electroencephalographic telemetry that facilitates helping "average" people reach some of the "states of mind" possible through deep meditation which current scientific research (on long-time meditators) indicate usually take 10,000 hours or so of practice to attain. Note by saying "states of mind" here, I do not mean "getting high," or "recreational altered states," in any form. I refer to "states of mind" that are inherently stress-relieving, "healing," offer deeply rational and sane insight into the "inner" self (where "deeply rational and sane" are somewhat defined within the context of pragmatic ideas found, imho, most clearly expressed in certain teachings preserved in Theravadan Buddhism as interpreted and "re-vivified" by certain contemporary interpreters). If we gotta send some magnetic fields and/or sound waves and/or sub- or super- audible waves into your brain, that's cool too. You'd have to be licensed to use that technology like you are licensed to drive a car (?) All the revenue (if any) from this project which would be public-domain and open-source would be donated to non-profit organizations who demonstrate that over 90% of their revenue goes directly to help children around the world. best, Bill

Hi Richard, At best something "soothing" that might induce a "placebo" effect, at worst a "scam" preying on some fatuous folks' finding "mystery" and "mana" in the pseudo-technological. Another triumph of marketing over substance :) Probably better for you than, like Madonna, working out in the gym and dieting to the point you look like a skeleton with bulging veins, probably better for you than paying >=US $75 an hour to talk to most so-called "psycho-therapists." Nowhere near as good as made-fresh-every-day soy-milk from a street vendor in Chiang Mai Thailand. best, Bill
