Wild Hogs
-
I just saw on Nat Geo Wild (Dr. Brady Barr) an episode where they said that wild "Judas Hogs" are plaguing the southern United States, destroying crops and farms and spreading diseases. What struck me as interesting, and got my BS senses tingling, is the staggering number of animals they mentioned. They were talking about millions of wild hogs here. Is it true? or should I add this show to my black list?

Well, I've seen over 40 in a 1 acre field where I hunt at in southern GA. While it doesn't account for millions, it still a high number and most of them were piglets, usually 406 in a litter per sow, which just means more breeding pairs. So, I doubt they were BSing about the number being in the millions. We've killed tons of them and gave the meat away and we never make a dent. There was a time when there weren't any hogs in the area that hunt in, but people started illegally releasing hogs, especially russian boars, and the numbers just soared. And as far as John being the most well armed programmer, I believe I may be able to give him a run for his money. :-D C

Yes I was attacked by wild hogs last night on the way home from soccer practice! The week before my wife was accosted by a trio of the filthy things, but she faced them down, and beat them to death with a teflon pan. Last month we had record muggings in NYC due to wild hogs, and last December I was in a bloody hand-to-hoof confrontation with one - I still have the scars on my elbow. Scary stuff, you couldn't make this up!!!

Shotgun? Heh, firearms are for wusses. ;P You should use a bow. That'll put some hair on your chest. ;)

A bow>!?!? A real man uses a boar spear. You might want to add cross guards to keep the not quite dead boar from charging up the spear to get you though.

I wonder if that figure holds true now, since John Simmons bought a new gun.
A .45 pistol ain't a hoggin' gun. A 30-30 lever-action rifle - now THAT is a good hoggin' gun... I have one of those (a Model 94 Winchester). :)

But then you gotta chase your ammo. A rifle takes less time.

Hogs have multiple offspring each year and no (or grossly inadequate numbers of) natural predators to control them so they are getting out of control. To make things even nicer wild boars are mean and don't have an instinctive fear of people. Pistols firing rounds[^]with as much kinetic energy as a full power .30cal rifle[^]bullet aren't created solely to cater to the people who have to have the biggest of everything. Normal[^]pistol rounds don't have enough stopping power to effectively kill a charging boar (or grizzly/polar bear) before it rips you up enough that the forest service will probably find two dead bodies side by side, and if you've got the wrists to control it are much handier than a rifle.

Worked on a hog farm when I was a kid. Every so often you would get a big mean aggressive male. One of the other guys started carrying a gun, said the next time that hog came after him he was going to shoot it. It had torn a huge gash in his leg the month before. Well long story short, it attacked him again, never bothered me I think it just did not like him, he shot it in the head. Cheap nine mil, cheap bullets, the bullet bounced off the hogs thick skull and got him in the leg. Never slowed the hog down, two days later he was back to servicing the sows. One month later, they guy was still healing up, nasty infection.

I would be very surprised if they are truly "wild hogs." I would find it much more beliveable if they were in fact feral pigs because there is a big difference between the two. There have been articles in the local media around here (Oregon, USA) about the feral pig problem and I have run across one mountain biking. He was rather frightening actually so I cut my ride short that day.

"...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001I can't remember them all, but here's what I have off the top of my head. Rifles (Single Shot/Bolt/Lever/Semi-Auto) (probably 20-30 rifles) - several each in .22, .22-250, .22 hornet, .223, .25-06, .243, .270, .280 by marlin, ruger, remington - several each in .30-30, .30-06 by marlin, winchester, browning, new england firearms - 1 7mm god I hate this gun! The last I bought was a single shot break action New England Firearms in .270. This gun is a tack driver. Shotguns (Single Shot/Semi-Auto) (10-15 total) - several each in .410, 20 and 12 guages by mossberg, winchester, browning, savage - muzzleloading Muzzleloaders (flint, side lock and inline percussion) and Bows (8 or so muzzleleaders) - .36, .40, .54 muzzleloaders - a 12 and 20 guage muzzleloading shotgun - compound and traditional recurve I love to hunt with the muzzleloaders the most because you have to be more careful with not getting the powder, flints, caps wet and you get the occasional misfire. I am not into pistols as much, so I only have a .22 target pistol, an old .45 of my grandfathers and some old .38 specials my dad had in the police. This is just off the top of my head and since I haven't been hunting in the past 2 years I don't get a chance to use them much and the only time I break them out is to clean them. I'd have to look again to list out details and I dunno if I will do that lol. C

Here in S. FL we also have wild hogs, but the Cane Toads are worse. The other day one (Cane Toad) tried to jump in my wife's pickup and drive it off. Just last week I go into hand-to-hand combat with one when I took the garbage out. Once, one blocked our front door for several hours and we could not even get out of the house. You can't make this stuff up! I could tell you more stories...

The bald spot is from you mother's genes, I'm afraid. IIRC male pattern baldness is linked through the mother's side.

Have not seen the show or read the responses, but yes, they are a menace. I don't know the numbers though. It's like any non-native animal presented into an eco-system. Cats don't seem too harmful but they are crushing the native wildlife in parts of Australia. I don't know about the "spreading disease" part though--that's new to me. Are they spreading disease to other animals (which seems much more likely) or to humans?
