.. since you were 18 to when you were 30 (or so far if your age < 30) The average I have heard is around 8. I was reading a book which said that people who change at least 8 jobs by the time they are 30 have more growth in career. How true is it? BTW I have changed only 3 jobs.

Zero, but then I'm just 19 (so I've never had a job)

I left uni and had my first 'real' job for 9.5yrs (discounting part time and summer jobs when younger). I've had my second job now for 2.5yrs. So to answer your question, I've changed jobs once since I was 18 (am now 34). That said, I'm not particularly career minded. I only changed jobs because I emigrated. If I was still in the UK, I'd probably still be in the same job (my first one).

I think six times up until 30. Ten in total so far I think.

Twice times, maybe thrice if my memory is bad, tack on a few more if you count temp / side jobs. Once if you only count legal full-time. Never if you count programming jobs. Add one if you count switching jobs while keeping the same employer, subtract one if you don't count getting fired.

Define "changed jobs"; is it only voluntary? If so, I think about two.

6 and counting. I've also run gamut the on exiting employment. I was fired from my first job, it was worth it. I was laid off once. I've also quit a few times for another job or location.

Average 8 for all employees, or for IT people? I changed 5 times from 18 to 30 and that was considered a lot at the time I now have about 18 under my belt! 1 job every 18 months looks bad on a resume unless you're contracting or your career is progressing (and one always wonders why you need to move to progres syour career). When employing I like loyalty - I like to feel people working with me will be around, will ahve some buy-in to the company and not just be 'workers'. And what is meant by 'growth' in a career? I've known many a good developer ruined by some strange belief that they really needed to become a project manager in order to 'grow' - unfortunately a good developer does not (necessarily) a good PM make!

Its 4 years after my graduation, and this is the second job. As you might know, its not that common in India to work while you study, and also not to change too many jobs. But, things are getting changed nowadays.

I've spent the last 15 years ducking that move. When I got the current contract it was stated clearly that I am a developer, will stay a developer and will not be "promoted" or have my "career" managed. They recently tried to get me interested in Oracle BI so I narrowed the definition to applications developer. HR really don't like me.

None so far. But I still have 6 years to reach 30. I can, well, make a record by then. :)
