How many times have you changed jobs ...
-
.. since you were 18 to when you were 30 (or so far if your age < 30) The average I have heard is around 8. I was reading a book which said that people who change at least 8 jobs by the time they are 30 have more growth in career. How true is it? BTW I have changed only 3 jobs.
Define "changed jobs"; is it only voluntary? If so, I think about two.

6 and counting. I've also run gamut the on exiting employment. I was fired from my first job, it was worth it. I was laid off once. I've also quit a few times for another job or location.

Average 8 for all employees, or for IT people? I changed 5 times from 18 to 30 and that was considered a lot at the time I now have about 18 under my belt! 1 job every 18 months looks bad on a resume unless you're contracting or your career is progressing (and one always wonders why you need to move to progres syour career). When employing I like loyalty - I like to feel people working with me will be around, will ahve some buy-in to the company and not just be 'workers'. And what is meant by 'growth' in a career? I've known many a good developer ruined by some strange belief that they really needed to become a project manager in order to 'grow' - unfortunately a good developer does not (necessarily) a good PM make!

Its 4 years after my graduation, and this is the second job. As you might know, its not that common in India to work while you study, and also not to change too many jobs. But, things are getting changed nowadays.

I've spent the last 15 years ducking that move. When I got the current contract it was stated clearly that I am a developer, will stay a developer and will not be "promoted" or have my "career" managed. They recently tried to get me interested in Oracle BI so I narrowed the definition to applications developer. HR really don't like me.

Fortunately nowadays resumes are mostly electronic, so we do not have to worry about page count anymore!

In my first career - electronics engineer - 3 times over a span of 14 years. In the interlude, living in hell and taking any job I could find to eat, 3 regular jobs over a span of 12 years that included self-employment and part-time teaching at college. My second career, electrical power engineer, began 4 years ago, and barring a layoff, I don't have any plans to leave. Ever. There are a couple of myths I'd like to dispel, though. One is that the key to advancement in salary is to change jobs often. I've never changed jobs for a higher salary (within my profession), but each time my previous accomplishments were rewarded - and valued - more by my new employer than my former. I didn't get more $$$, but I got the job title and description I earned but did not receive previously, and that changed the pay scale available to me dramatically. When I moved to a new position, I left the top of the salary ladder and entered the bottom at the new job. It helps. Another is that frequent job changes lead to more professional growth. Bull. It leads to a dead end. When I, or most other managers I've known in my 40 years of working, see a resume that lists jobs that lasted 2 or 3 years, it goes in the circular file. Occasional short term employment is acceptable - one of mine lasted 2 years, as it was obvious they wouldn't be around for long (they closed a few months after I left, dead of incompetence), but a job hopper isn't worth training. If you can't stick with a job at least 5 years, you're not worth interviewing. Obviously, the rules are different for youngsters just entering the field - it often takes a young person a couple of jobs to figure out just what he/she wants to do in life. That's normal, and should be considered. But an idiot who changes jobs every couple of years to get more money isn't worth having in the company for 5 minutes.

I've been given the advice that I need to become either a PM or an architect. There is a tendency to believe something if you hear it enough. I enjoy developing, so I always wonder why I would have to change? To avoid learning new technology?
