How many times have you changed jobs ...

.. since you were 18 to when you were 30 (or so far if your age < 30) The average I have heard is around 8. I was reading a book which said that people who change at least 8 jobs by the time they are 30 have more growth in career. How true is it? BTW I have changed only 3 jobs.
Job in terms of career, I'm still on my first (I'm only 23) and I've been here 2 years now. Including other jobs, +2 to that. I worked in a pub for 5 years to help finance uni, and during the same period for a year or so I had another side "job" as a "laser games supervisor" :laugh: for 1 night a week. That was a fun job.

I was in school at 18. 19 - Junior Technical Assistant, Dept of Electrical Engineering, Meb Uni ( temp position ) 20 - worked in the library at Melb Uni ages are fuzzy from here worked with my dad as a gardener while studying worked in a call center begging for charity sold chocolate door to door sold vacuum cleaners door to door sold dry cleaning to businesses sold coffee and tea ( Robert TImms ) sold stationery ( SPS Supply ) -- started programming in 1999 -- worked for Viewbuild worked for Dytech Solutions worked for MAST Technology worked for VDIC working for Webster Veterinary That does not count contract work, only full time. Oh, I am 40. I started programming at 30. In that case, 9 jobs.

I've been given the advice that I need to become either a PM or an architect. There is a tendency to believe something if you hear it enough. I enjoy developing, so I always wonder why I would have to change? To avoid learning new technology?

1st Job 6 years some bumming around 2nd Job 14 years and counting. (I'm 40) :-\

I've changed jobs 3 times. The current job is probably the best (technically). [Added] The first job (which I haven't counted in this list) was delivering milk, door to door in the morning. I'm glad to have worked my way out of those days. :) [/added]

6 if you count temp jobs, 5 if not; 8 if you count spells working at the same place during university holidays individually rather than as one. 3 were doing web/online application development 2 were in embedded systems 1 involved sticking labels on bottles and bottles on conveyor belts

I started my first programming job when I was 17 :) Old times! However, the positions I held during university were on the whole part-time jobs and there was a high turnover there, after graduation, to this day (I'm 29) I've switched jobs 5 times

I'd be interested to hear the explanation behind that (as it seems someone is backing your post up :)), as I thought the same. Surely a CV illustrating lots of jobs with low period of stay would show that you're either not commited or unreliable?

As I told you the reason why I was curious was that I read more job changes = greater career advancement esp. till the age of 30. BTW I did not vote 1. I gave a 5 to compensate now.

Here is my take on it. Let's say you are in one job for a long time. You will get comfortable with it. You will work in the same environment for a long time and will not be exposed to different challenges, different people, different styles etc. Contrast with the guy who has changed jobs early in the career, he will have worked with variety of different people, different styles etc. So that's one advantage he has. Obviously, you have to learn something at each job. If you don't then my theory falls apart. Job hoppers who just hop without learning anything are of no use.

By the time I hit 30 was on my second job. Have now beenthrough 5 jobs, my last job I remained in for 6 years and should have left after 6 months. Have a criminal tendency towards loyalty and toughing things out. I wouldnt recommend it to anyone, if it looks like, smells like and tastes like ....
