I am the owner of a small technology firm and like all other small business right now, we are hurting. Either we will come out of this recession with explosive growth or I will need to find a new job. I have a Bachelors degree in IT and i have taught myself programming (perl, C#, vb.net, SQL, ect...) but am wanting to beef up my resume OR know what to look for in potential new hires. Ok so i have three questions: 1) What are the best IT certifications to get? (Network+, Security+, MCTS, ect..)? 2) What are the best Programming certifications to get? (MCPD, MCAD, ect...)? 3) Which is the better route to go: College or Certifications? Please answer all questions independent of the last (if you know what i mean)? ;P

            1. ? 2. Few years back MCSD seemed to be the big cert/title to have. For that you had to pick up 4 separate certifications. Not sure if that's still the case. 3. I think it depends on where you are in your career. If you have a degree(virtually any) and some years of experience I would pass on more college. For many potential employers the degree is usually good for a check box on a hiring sheet. One will do. Certs are a good way to show that you are knowledgeable about a specific topic. If you're shooting to get a job programming C#, a couple C# certs will help convince others you'll be able to do it. I still think experience trumps all else. But a little resume padding never hurt.
