I am the owner of a small technology firm and like all other small business right now, we are hurting. Either we will come out of this recession with explosive growth or I will need to find a new job. I have a Bachelors degree in IT and i have taught myself programming (perl, C#, vb.net, SQL, ect...) but am wanting to beef up my resume OR know what to look for in potential new hires. Ok so i have three questions: 1) What are the best IT certifications to get? (Network+, Security+, MCTS, ect..)? 2) What are the best Programming certifications to get? (MCPD, MCAD, ect...)? 3) Which is the better route to go: College or Certifications? Please answer all questions independent of the last (if you know what i mean)? ;P

When I'm hiring, programming certifications count against you. Your binary choice of college or certifications ignores the route of hands on experience. As I've said before here, when I make a mental list of the the top ten engineers I know--people I'd hire without question--only two have computer science degrees (three have no degrees and half have engineering degrees, typically EE.)

To be honest, once you have a business in place and running you need sales not certs. Hiring developers with the right qualifications is a simple function of cash. Getting other companies to pay you enough to cover what the labor costs, however, is expensive. I remember 3 or 4 years ago I was talking to a small business owner, he was a developer like myself but he had a problem. His problem was he had too much business that he could handle and was working 120 hour weeks and wanted me to take some overage. I am always happy to oblige and told him my rate and he choked. Although, he was pulling a 6 figure salary he was charging his clients about $20 an hour for the work. I wished him luck and told him I couldn't help. I don't really have a point other than to say sales is crucial but not as important as correct pricing in a service environment.
Need custom software developed? I do custom programming based primarily on MS tools with an emphasis on C# development and consulting. A man said to the universe: "Sir I exist!" "However," replied the universe, "The fact has not created in me A sense of obligation." --Stephen Crane

I totally agree with what you are saying. Most software companies biggest problem is that they have a rough time bringing their product to market and to be honest we have issues with that as well. My question was more geared toward me personally. If the business doesnt work out is it worth investing some time/money into more education/certs or let me experience speak for itself.

I am personally working on a second career and if software development keeps going where it is going I am going to drop it like a bad habit. Going to try to be a South American Busch[sic] Pilot.
