Interesting thing about Palm Pre Development

So I was looking at Palm Pre development, I had not paid much attention to it before. I was truly amazed to find that applications are supposed to be written using HTML5 and JavaScript. Some of the HTML elements also get hardware acceleration. The nice thing about HTML and Javascript is the simplicity. I was suspecting that the apps will be slow but it is not at all the case from what I observed.

I'm a Pre owner. FANTASTIC phone, but the build quality is extremely poor. Check out precentralDOTnet. They already have 100+ applications. It only took a week after release to root the device. There is a great pre dev wiki, forgot the address, and those guys are doing some really cool stuff: phone as modem, turning the phone into a web server, and it's very linux friendly. I recommend checking it out if you're really interested.

How well do the applications perform in daily use? From what I tested in 5 mins at store it all looked good.

That's dependent on the amount of cards you have open. I keep about 4 open at all times and it only hangs a bit if they're all trying to update at once. Normally I'm streaming Pandora all the time, and I flip between email, messaging, and weather. The Mojo SDK is free to download and has a built in emulator. A lot of the stock apps are garbage, but the app store doesn't "officially" open for a few months. A really cool Easter egg is the Konami Code (up up down down left right left right b a start) is what you type to enter developer mode.

The biggest disappointment for me about my Pre is the battery life. If I am actively texting (and by that I mean 5 or 6 an hour), my pre will drain it's battery in less than 10 hrs. This coupled with the fact that you can't charge a batter outside the phone REALLY sucks. There are a few quirks that you have to get used to with the multi-touch but other than that, I can't say I've ever had any application based issues.

I want a Pre sooo badly. I have no use for it, but that sliding multitasking eye-candy + JS Goodness === Lust. Thinking i might just try to snag one on Ebay... For my wife, of course. ;)
Did a double-take there, thought I was reading a post of mine! Got a Palm Pre yesterday, liking it so far. Multitasking is very nice for a phone, kicks iPhone arse.

Had one for two days now and haven't had many perf. issues. As mentioned it depends how many apps/cards you have open at once and what they are doing. You can have 8 open at once and it will be fine but if one starts doing something intensive then they can all slow down for a few seconds. Then again, I had slow-downs on the iPhone and that didn't even let me choose what to multitask. I like it so far, need more time with it though to see if I'm going to keep it.

Ha! Ended up buying one for my wife about a month ago; she loves it so far; the web browser is solid, apps are easy to install (I put the PreWare installer on for her so she can do homebrew apps in addition to the app catalog stuff), and there are patches to the built-in apps for just about everything. Only complaint so far is the physical construction: we had to replace it twice before getting one with a battery that fit properly. I'm withholding judgment on the OS itself 'till i've had a chance to play some more with the SDK (just finally got around to installing the emulator and Eclipse plugins).
