The article specifically mentioned autism, not Aspergers. Yes, they are on the same spectrum, but they are not the same issue. My daughter is autistic; she will be starting behavioural and speech therapy in the next couple of weeks. Do I expect it to magically change her life? No, but it would be nice if she learned to answer questions or communicate in some way other than repeating what she has previously heard. She doesn't formulate new sentences; she repeats EXACTLY what she has heard. A few weeks back, she was eating from a fruit cup and we asked her if it was apples or pears. Her response was, "And he ate through two pears" - a line from "The Very Hungry Catepillar". To tell us she is thirsty, she will say, "Would you like a glass of juice?" And, current research points to autism spectrum disorders being MEDICAL not MENTAL disorders; now, we just need insurance companies to understand that... Tim
Good luck, no I mean it, and for insurance companies to understand that.. that will take a lot.. autism isn't understood well enough yet

They never do that. They mention autism and in 99% of the cases they refer to the whole spectrum including PDD-NOS and Asperger's and whatnot. Part of their ignorance, not mine.

Well that's no treatment, and FYI, they do have the "make normal" treatment - I just refused it, as would any sensible person.
You do not have autism, you have something on the autism specturm. They are talking about a medical study and the study will use correct terminology. They are talking about early treatment of autism to reduce the severity and it can be VERY severe. Any reduction can reap large benifits in that persons quality of life. You are right, making people normal for the sake of making people normal is wrong, however projecting your personal experience of something that is related is not helpful in the slightest in this instance.

So how is it any different? If I wouldn't have had Asperger's but plain autism they would have tried to cure me all the same
I've said what the treatment is, I've said how it helps, are you saying that these things are wrong? Provide some refutement, prove that everyone everywhere is out to make everyone in to normal clones. How many people do you know who work with helping children with such problems? how many of them say all they do is try to normalise people for all the wrong reasons? You say "cure", yet the majority of medical science says it isnt something that can be cured, its only something that can be treated to improve quality of life. You say all this with vitriol and a blinkered perspective. Explain why it's not different? Explain why the recommended treatment which has benifited so many is so bad? Explain why you attack the whole area when you have (from what you've said) only experienced such a small and obviously fairly ignorant part of the field? Again I'd like to stress that I'm not syaing you are wrong about people out there who doing things badly ... who say they will "cure" and "make normal", but I am saying that your generalised attack undermines your message and is just plain wrong.

They would have gave you hardcore psychotropics and destroyed your life for the sake of experimentation. When you are considered "mentally ill", you are nothing but a disposable test rat.

Over the past few years I have seen or heard TV/Radio programs where members of the deaf community advocated against the use of Cochlear Implants and I could never understand their reasoning. I am in the same situation with your post. Leaving aside whether the 'cure' is valid or not, any research into the causes and treatment of autism should only be applauded. I do not have Asperger's Syndrome, although my condition exhibits many of the same symptoms as you quoted, uncomfortable with people (especially in large groups), eye contact, crowded elevators and in my case even going outside is a problem. One thing I do know is that if someone could relieve me of this affliction, they would have my undying gratitude.

I have heard of a claimed cure for things like this, but it involved polished rice that was sprinkled with water from some stream that was somehow "special" I don't believe it will actually do anything but if you're interested I could ask the guy that told me for more information.

Yea you're right of course.. On the other hand, there are also those psycho rapists who just keep getting released, to the point that it's starting to appear intentional, would you know more of that?

Well, it certainly manipulates the public's perceived need for reinforced "law and order" that otherwise might seem intrusive or undesirable in some way.

These sort of things are only 'special' if you believe them to be so. I don't think I could suspend my disbelief enough for that. Thanks for the offer though. :)

From what I have read, the treatment will not prevent you from spraying bullets in a crowded place just so you can have some piece and quiet, the pills just make you feel less guilty after.
