Is any one using Fences[^], I just stumbled upon this yesterday, now my desk top is much organized and neat. I was looking for such a program for years now, and this is exactly what I have imagined. They said it works on Windows 7 too, though I have tried it on XP.

Right click on desktop and uncheck "Show desktop icons". Thats it. Neat and clean desktop available.

      Now I do.

At least in Windows XP... You can actually drag a folder from anywhere on your file system (i.e., not just folders from your desktop) and stick it to the edge of the desktop. You can then grab that little edge-folder thingy and move it over your desktop and it becomes a window that does not show on the taskbar. The original folder location remains intact, but you get the benefit of having a mini window that you can place files in. As far as I can tell, it is pretty much the same thing as that Fences program.

Visual Studio is an excellent GUIIDE.

I don't get this...if you have lots of icons on your desktop for commonly used docs/progs. Then surely you have said docs/progs open, and obscuring all the icons on the desktop???? I'd use taskbar folders instead, that way the icon is accessible what ever I'm running.

I still prefer RocketDock, that way I don't have to bring the desktop to the front to find my links.

I use ObjectDock also by Stardock - never had any problems with it, worked first time and has always worked and my desktop is beautifully uncluttered!

I have Fences installed on several machines. For me its now a must have (ok a really like). I like the double click and hide all fences feature. I wish they had a hide this fence option, but you can achieve that effect by Excluding other fences from hiding. If you haven't tried it, you should give it a try.

Thanks - it looked interesting until I got to the bit "This is a beta...and will expire in November 2009". I don't install beta software on my working machine, not since the incident. I don't want to talk about it.

My god are you right. I did until 2 days ago. I had installed some beta controls from ComponentOne for Iphone dev and it hosed my machine I could not install the new version of the controls we just purchased for 1500. After fighting it for 5 hours I finally formatted and reloaded and have been doing so for 2 days. Normally I would not have formatted but the other dev I worked with had already installed the controls and we cannot work on the same projects with different versions.:confused::confused:

my solution is pretty simple: turn on auto-arrange / align to grid. then i delete things when i see more than three columns of icons. i put all of my essential apps in the quick-launch bar.

I put all of my essential apps in Slickrun. I dislike the Quick launch bar and keep it turned off.

Cheers, Vikram. (Proud to have finally cracked a CCC!)

I download everything to my desktop, but then it starts to get near 3 columns, I delete the installers and sort the rest into my documents. All the programs I use frequently are in my start menu, the rest I can access in a few seconds more.

Nope, I just randomly place things on it all over the place, with decent names, then click somewhere on the desktop and start typing the name. Placing them in a specific spot doesn't matter, the company wallpaper...well I would rather them use http://www.boingboing.net/images/snakes-white-big.jpg[^. Can't see anything on the desktop when it's all "pretty". At home, their's nothing on the desktop except for a few shortcuts. I like the start menu and a nice picture of a Battlestar Galactica Base Ship (mostly black). :)
