... everything old is new again. http://www.yourdictionary.com/computer/program-manager[^] In win3.x I had all my groups un-minimized and sized to show all the containing icons without scrolling; always wierded out anyone else who had to use my PC.

But those borders are not flat enough!

my solution is pretty simple: turn on auto-arrange / align to grid. then i delete things when i see more than three columns of icons. i put all of my essential apps in the quick-launch bar.

At the moment I have 6 columns and 12 rows although most of these could be deleted I do not bother.

Is any one using Fences[^], I just stumbled upon this yesterday, now my desk top is much organized and neat. I was looking for such a program for years now, and this is exactly what I have imagined. They said it works on Windows 7 too, though I have tried it on XP.

I glanced at your post too quickly, and read it as feces, which made me do a serious double take. I've found Lysol works fine for me.

you have to turn on active desktop with web and "show web content on my desktop" consult windows help or google how to do that.

At least in Windows XP... You can actually drag a folder from anywhere on your file system (i.e., not just folders from your desktop) and stick it to the edge of the desktop. You can then grab that little edge-folder thingy and move it over your desktop and it becomes a window that does not show on the taskbar. The original folder location remains intact, but you get the benefit of having a mini window that you can place files in. As far as I can tell, it is pretty much the same thing as that Fences program.

Visual Studio is an excellent GUIIDE.

I don't get this...if you have lots of icons on your desktop for commonly used docs/progs. Then surely you have said docs/progs open, and obscuring all the icons on the desktop???? I'd use taskbar folders instead, that way the icon is accessible what ever I'm running.

I have Fences installed on several machines. For me its now a must have (ok a really like). I like the double click and hide all fences feature. I wish they had a hide this fence option, but you can achieve that effect by Excluding other fences from hiding. If you haven't tried it, you should give it a try.

My god are you right. I did until 2 days ago. I had installed some beta controls from ComponentOne for Iphone dev and it hosed my machine I could not install the new version of the controls we just purchased for 1500. After fighting it for 5 hours I finally formatted and reloaded and have been doing so for 2 days. Normally I would not have formatted but the other dev I worked with had already installed the controls and we cannot work on the same projects with different versions.:confused::confused:

I put all of my essential apps in Slickrun. I dislike the Quick launch bar and keep it turned off.

Cheers, Vikram. (Proud to have finally cracked a CCC!)
