A manager in the office recently requested that his employees take the Myers-Briggs personality test. There was talk around the office that many developers are INTJ, because that personality suits the way developers work. I wonder what the distribution is among the CPers. I am a very strong INTJ. My wife calls me a hermit, my son says it fits perfectly, and my daughter (who has strong opinions about many things) is also an INTJ. After 7 hours, 42% INTJ INTJ 5 ISTP 2 ENTJ 2 ISTJ 2 ENTP 1

I'm a Libra. It has about as much value as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.

http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp[^] Jim, I think INTPs are also common amongst devs. I am an ENTJ (Fieldmarshal).

Cheers, Vikram. (Proud to have finally cracked a CCC!)

"[INTJs] Like INTPs, they are most comfortable working alone and tend to be less sociable than other types." (from wikipedia) Sounds like a programmer to me. :)

Stop. Right. There. I would have serious objections if my employer asked me to take any kind of psychological assessment test. I don't care how the test is administered or who sees the results. It smacks of manipulation based on factors unrelated to your job performance.

Sounds like a good theory to me. I took that test a while back for a psychology class and I am apparently an INTJ. Also, that seems odd that a manager would request that such a test be taken. A new form of discrimination?

I think he was trying to see whether the test and descriptions were valid. Probably more playing than anything else.

Then you need to start with a personality measure that has some kind of scientific validity and isn't just made up.

ISTP, used to be INTJ, INTP if i take the test with people around. It's all a matter of when i decide to give up and just lie.

IMO, yes! It's a safe bet at least one-third the people here would be INTPs and INTJs. Mind you, these types are very few in the general population. And if you go by the "the exception proves the rule" saying, consider me - I am an ENTJ and I do NOT want to remain a developer! I am looking to be a Business Analyst. [EDIT]Just to make it clear - I am NOT saying people should be hired/discriminated based only on the MBTI results.[/EDIT]

Yeah, my daughter says that she is an I (introverted) when she takes the test the first time, but if she takes it a few minutes later, she is an E (extroverted). :wtf:

Is that actually legal? To ask an employee to take a personality test?

Maybe not. And it may not be useful for hiring. But if your personality is unsuited to long periods of solitude, searching for something that will make your program work, you may decide ahead of time that software development may not be what you want to do when you grow up. Could you use this a poll to see if there is a preponderance of one or two types in the CP population?

That was my first thought too, what would they do with refusals?

A manager in the office recently requested that his employees take the Myers-Briggs personality test. There was talk around the office that many developers are INTJ, because that personality suits the way developers work. I wonder what the distribution is among the CPers. I am a very strong INTJ. My wife calls me a hermit, my son says it fits perfectly, and my daughter (who has strong opinions about many things) is also an INTJ. After 7 hours, 42% INTJ INTJ 5 ISTP 2 ENTJ 2 ISTJ 2 ENTP 1
