Google/Bing/Yahoo for "Web OS", and you'll find similar Operating Systems, mostly based on a serverside ASP.NET or PHP, and clientside JavaScript. Some of them even feature complete SDK's, allowing you to build your own applications for those environments. Yes, they got their uses. There's a userbase that's content with the features. Think users who are interested in accessing their todo-list, calendar, mail etc, from any machine (regardless whether it's an iMac, a Linux server or a PDA with Windows Mobile on it) It's not the kind of user that downloads screensavers or utilities, it's not someone who needs to fire up Visual Studio fast or plays a lot of World of Warcraft. For the record; a Web-OS is a contradictio in terminis, as an OS exists as a layer between the hardware and the applications. There is no Web-OS that delivers drivers that my PC can boot of, and I'm shuddering by the thought of 3D graphic card-drivers written in JavaScript. I'd advise to wait with formatting that drive and reinstalling the OS :)

But it's not an operating system. It's an operating environment entirely dependent on an actual operating system to work.

Verb   marketing Present participle of market. Noun   marketing (countable and uncountable; plural marketings)   1. Making people buy stuff they don't need

Yeah kinda what I thought too. I reckon it could be useful for example if Google's OS was just its Chrome browser running at boot time on say a netbook (believe that is what they are targeting, netbooks that is). The remote file system and basic apps could be enough for a normal user!
