The UK is so violent that a single assult (without firearms) that ends (probably unintentionally) in death is big news. How are things in the States?

It's not the teenagers that are a problem. It's the news editors.

So a gang of 12 year olds beating a man to death in front of his 5 year old granddaughter is not news worthy??!! If not, what is?

http://in.news.yahoo.com/20/20090907/1416/tnl-indian-dies-after-racial-attack-in-l.html[^] I keep hearing about the news of british teenagers killing people very often. BBC is filled with such news almost every day. Are British teenagers this dangerous? What is their problem? Is it because of the way they are brought up by their family?

Bad! These incidents can be stopped by active involvement of community in the cause of making the kids, and all, aware of what is good and what is bad.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom[^] Population estimate is in excess of 61 Million; Let's assume your 1% assumption is the upper bound of juvenile delinquents under the age of 18, that would mean 1% * 61,000,000 = 610,000, that's still a high number.

Any murder is a tragedy -- but some countries appear to have downgraded it to a statistic.

Probably depends on the area - I used to live in Bolton where there seemed to be a murder every 2 days and they hardly ever even made it into local news.

True enough. Manchester went completely off the rails, too. Too many kids wanting to be US-style drug barons.

I have no idea what you're talking about - what country doesn't consider a gang of 12 year olds beating an elderly man to death a significant problem?

I don't know what words you have been responding to, but they certainly weren't the ones I wrote. Or do you honestly think that these kids genuinely intended murder? Fine, it's probably best for all concerned if they're locked away for a long time, but it's extremely likely that the incident started as a bit of general nastiness (that we can all live without) and went a hell of a lot further than anyone that age would have intended.

Read your post. You downplayed the whole event and diverted attention to the US (which has no bearing on the event).

I honestly think a bunch of young thugs with little or no respect for human life beat the hell out of another human being for no reason. Did they intend to kill him? Who knows. I believe criminals should be judged by the consequences of their action not the intent.

And I haven't said anything contrary to that. I suggest you take off the bright-scarlet-tinted glasses, and start reading the actual words I write, rather than listen to the words of the little red guy on your shoulder. Is it that you are ashamed of the fact that such killings are commonplace in just about every US city? If so, you can't blame me for it. Blame "the American Dream". It doesn't have anything to do with what happened here. It must have embarrassed you so you are trying to divert attention from the fact that a bunch of barbaric British children are capable of such deprivation.
