A bit of a repost, I'm afraid; this was in the Insider (I think) last week. IIRC, the general conclusion was that this guy is a complete douchebag (as opposed to a partial one), and should remove his head from Stallman's anal orifice.

What a bunch of morons: what, exactly, is wrong with MS attempting to profit from its investment? Further, why shouldn't they restrict the software and/or create different priced versions so as to maximise the potential sales and market??? Perhaps if open source software was better/easier to use/more accessible/easier for hardware manufacturers to install/easier for users to install it might provide real competition to MS. Perhaps that's the issue they should address.
Interestingly, despite people like this always banging on about Microsoft, in practice successful open source software has inflicted more damage on less successful commercial vendors than it has on Microsoft.

Many of his arguements sound great and seem to make sense at first. But most of them sit on the foundation of people being able to look into the source code and fix something themselves if its broken or they dont like how it works. Very few people in the world (compared to the general population) have the skills to jump into an operating system and change it to do what they want.

No, they're paranoid, as is any person who can't accept that not everyone wants to share everything they've done. Not every piece of software has to be free. Developers put a ton of time in to their work, just like any other professional. If they choose to provide the product for free, good for them. If they choose to charge for it, they've certainly earned it. Apple hasn't released THEIR OS source code have they? How about Adobe? They don't provide their source code either. People just like to pick on Microsoft because it's the "in" thing to do, and it really has gotten rather boring. Not knocking you, so please don't take it that way. :cool: I AM knocking that site.

I really will never understand why there is so much people in the world that are completely pro-Linux or completely pro-windows... I like both of them, having Red Hat 5 in my server has saved me a lot of money and it works like charm (when it doesn't want to kick me in the a##), and having all the workstations in windows gives me easiness and compatibility with all the apps that everyone out there uses (but users are always crappy even if things are easy)... But this is only my opinion and the way I work, aaaaaaand I don't want to make any other to think like me, I've chosen and if other people wants to take a side its their problem... What I feel ridiculous is this amount of stupid things that Microsoft guys say about open source and the amount of stupid things the open source guys say of Microsoft... (of course it is more frequent to listen to that last case). Now I'll go back to my job...
Same here. I'm really REALLY looking forward to getting my new laptop next year, which will have Windows 7 on it, and I'm dual booting it with Ubuntu. I like both operating systems a lot.

Yawn! Hey out there, is Microsoft the only commercial organisation in the world that produces a number of products that it then sells on the open market for profit? How many car manufacturers give you a free copy of their maintenance manuals, and the source code to the engine management system? If Microsoft is such a terrible company then buy a Mac, or Sun or some box of bits that runs Linux... What? Oh, sorry I noodded off there...

He's an idiot. I have a mixed environment of both opensource (CentOS/Gentoo) and Windows (2003/2008). They both have their advantages and disadvantages. Updates for Windows, generally awesome, updates for Linux, pain. Uptime of server, Windows - generally good, can go about 90 days on a single boot, but thats because of 3rd party software, a base MS system, well, Had one up for 183 days, had to turn it off because I decided to put in another hard drive. And the same goes for Linux. Windows setup/configure - easy, Linux - pain. But hey, alot of people like it because its whole lot cheaper. And PHP/Perl is alot easier to get going reliably on linux then windows. But these are just my experiences.
