How old are you people??

Seems there's been a few personal 'polls' lately ... (long hair, etc.) ... sooo.... I would be interested to know what the average age of the people hangin' in the lounge is! Me first - just finished uni, @ 20 :-O. Most of our dev team is within a few years of this. NB ;P
39, except when I'm watching Bonkers or Darkwing Duck with my kids.

47, and didn't write a professional line of code until I was 33. I thought programming would be a good job to have when I got too old to do real work, but you young guys are starting to scare me!

28 years old. I started programming when I was 10 years old, I bought a book on BASIC programming at Radio Shack and wrote out programs in long hand on paper. When I showed my parents, they knew they had to get me a computer and soon I had a shiny new TRS-80 Color Computer with 16k RAM. Was anyone else a CoCo user? Chris Hafey

We had a Trash-80 in the house for a while too. But I learned programming on a Vic20 and C64. Did basic there then straight to machine code (no assembler :( ). Then selftaught C/C++ on the C64, when to a C128, and finally a DOS PC. Steve Maier, MCSD

I'll help you warp those statistics, Gennady. 48 today!
Congratulations ! BTW, what computer did you start from? Abacus like me? Regards, Gennady

I saved lots of pocket money for my 1200/1200 modem - £120! Next came my £300 40Mb harddisk!
Im 41 but admit to 32 in smoky bars after 1 a.m. I remember entering the bootstrap on the old PDP7 with the accumulator switches on the front because the bloody paper tape reader never worked Dave Carkeet, Santiago, Chile

Thank you! I started with a Commodore 64. It had a cassette tape drive for storage and I used an old TV for a monitor. My first "real" programs were done in dBase on those old green-screen, dual floppy drive, suitcase sized Compaq "portable" PCs. Ah, those were the days... Jack

I started on the Commodore 64 also, great little machine. In fact, last Christmas I went to buy a Nintendo 64 game as a present and absent mindedly asked for the "Commodore 64" section. The guy didn't have a clue...

I'm 20 and just finishing up my 2nd year of uni out of 5... i decided it would be best to take it easy so i could concentrate on what was important, windows programming :) James (the other James Johnson) There are two secrets to success. 1) Never tell anyone everything you know.

And I started (without jokes) on the first Russian computer "Ural 1" - lamp monster making 100 ips (it's not the mistake, not Mips !). It's reader worked with the punched film tape, agglutinated in endless loop (like Mobius band), and my first program (calculating e in x power by means of Taylor series) was written in codes. And nevertheless, you're absolutely right - those were the days ! Regards, Gennady

22, I cant really remember when I started to code, my parents always had some sort of machine ling around... I remember a TSR-80, Vic 20, Tandy 1000... not a single one ever had a hard drive!! even my first 386 did not have a HD! I just finished my first year of uni, sold my (small) company last year so I hope I’ll be able to get through school dept free... as long as I quit buying so much beer ;) Have a good one, -Ben "Its funny when you stop doing things not because they’re wrong, but because you might get caught." - Unknown
