He writes like someone whose only education is a six-week creative writing course. Most people, quite rightly, aren't too discriminating about the quality of the written word, so long as they can understand what is going on, and the story is interesting, but a reasonably large percentage of people has been educated in English, or has at least had to struggle to write reports/theses, etc, and quite simply cannot enjoy a badly written text. I've tried to read three Dan Brown novels (even I fall prey to hype), but didn't make it past the third chapter of any of them. Having to rewrite every sentence in your head becomes tiresome in very short order, and detracts hugely from any potential enjoyment.

Interesting note. I've thought the same about some other famous authors. Stephen King in particular. I've not read Brown yet.

Regardless of the literary merit of his work, like JK Rowling, he gets people reading, and that is a Very Good Thing.

I think Tom Chivers is just jealous of Brown's money. I actually bought the book the other day, eventhough I had promised myself to buy the paper back later. I just couldn't resist it... Anyway, I've read The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, and Deception Point. I found the latter to be very boring (to the point that I just put it back on the book shelf). Other than that, I don't have much to complain about.

Who is more pretentious? The author who writes a book for entertainment value or the critic shouting "I am smarter than he is!!!" Kittens on treadmills are not entertainment either, until they are viewed millions upon millions of times on YouTube when they become, prima facie, entertainment. I'm curious why you continue to read his books when they are so inferior and rubbish-filled. I met Dan Brown and attended a lecture of his before he was "famous" at a NH writer's club event. It's your prerogative to criticize his stories as inept and clumsy - reasonable people can disagree on that. I can tell you, however, that he is anything but lazy, ignorant, and pretentious. Have you ever met the man? Personal attacks like that are cheap, uncalled for, ignorant (by definition if you know nothing about him), and say far more about your shortcomings than his, if you ask me. Though I know you didn't. :D I do thank you, however, for these rantings because it underscores how lucky the rest of us dumb folk are who can just enjoy an entertaining, (but apparently) poorly written story.
