In our office, we were arguing about using Read Receipt in mails(outlook). I didnt like it, since it send a wrong message( sometimes I open and close the mail for later action, but it sends as if I read the mail). What do you think? Is it good to turn on read Recipt in mails? -Ravi

I know a lot of mail servers and mail clients that deliberately strip the read receipt requests because they can be used to trace whether an e-mail reaches its destination or not (i.e. by unscrupulous spammer types!). I personally never send them, and never allow outlook to send them back unless it's someone I know really needs to see it. -- Simon Steele Programmers Notepad - http://www.pnotepad.org/

I only use read receipts for important e-mail that I need to know was received and has been read - but I always add a note to explain why in such messages as some times it is stripped or the end user may have the "just click no" approach to everything. If I am sending to another Outlook user then I just use voting buttons instead with the single option of "Click here to show you have read this messge;" so the user can send the receipt whenever they find it convienient. If you are only targetting Outlook users (it seems so from your text) then you could use a similar approach.

I hate those things. For some reason, there are rather a lot of people who leave them turned on for *every* message, including those sent from mailing lists or to groups of people. If i'm gonna ignore you, i'm gonna do it anyway; the only thing a read receipt does for you is remove your excuse for calling me asking if i've recieved the email - now you know i have, and either must call me like you should have in the first place, or let me ignore you (like you should have in the first place...).

Read reciepts are not foolproof , outlook does not send them if it is previewed instead of opened , but it gives you some idea of if the person has at least skimmed it . Am I the only one forever playing catch up with technology , while all the juicy opportunites keep rolling by ?
