Beta 2 of VS2010 and .Net 4.0 are now available to MSDN subsribers (everyone else has to wait until Oct 21 to get it). VS2010 will be "launched" on March 22 of next year. The most astonishing news are the new SKUs: VS2010 Pro $799 VS2010 Pro with MSDN $1179 VS2010 Premium $5469 VS2010 So Expensive That God Can't Afford It - $11,294 - yes, that's FIVE DIGITS in the price (MS's name for it is VS2010 Ultimate)

I can't imagine anyone purchasing that one. I mean, MSDN subscriptions make sense, even the Premium, but Ultimate is plain crazy, and it's for one single user.

Visual Studio 2010 Professional minus the MSDN subscription will feature core developer features, the integrated development environment, platform support and parallel debugging. With the MSDN sub, you'll actually get the current and previous client and server operating system runtimes. Premium will include code analysis, database deployment, user interface testing and test impact analysis. The addition of the MSDN sub will give you the server platforms for Dynamics, SharePoint and Exchange, plus Office, Expression and some Team Foundation Server features. Ultimate will include all these features, plus UML tools, historical debugging, manual testing products and load testing along with the full Visual Studio 2010 Team Foundation Server.

Wow... Just... wow... You know, I like .NET and WPF and everything, but prices like that make me think it may be time to switch to Java.

If they just had one version and charged $50 for it they'd sell more than they could turn out.

The only way a human will own that is by going to the 'bay for pirates'... I suppose is a snap compared to Websphere which did retail some years ago around ~£60,000 GBP.

I presume you're joking, but a 300-500 price would be more realistic. And one version.

How does this compare to previous versions? Is this a lot more expensive? The Pro version doesn't seem to off the mark.

The only way a human will own that is by going to the 'bay for pirates'... I suppose is a snap compared to Websphere which did retail some years ago around ~£60,000 GBP.

The only way I'd get that version is if it came with a lifetime supply of BBBBBBBB (Beautiful Blond Bimbos Bearing Big Bodacious Bouncing Breasts). BTW, the value "BBBBBBBB", when converted to binary is 10111011101110111011101110111011. This information is provided to keep the post somewhat programmer-specific.

I'm glad they didn't just make up a price and say "$11,299". If it were that price you'd know they hadn't thought it through, but clearly at $11,294 they have done their best to scrape every last dollar off the price.

They should have scraped another $11,200 from the price. Only then it would have been obvious. :)
