Do you still buy LPs?

I just got my first (well first 4) LPs today! It was the AnotherLateNight Tommy Guerrero unmixed 3LP set and a 1 of 1000 additional one featuring a mixed version of Come Together (the Beatles classic for those that don't know) and some stuff read by Sir Patrick Moore that I haven't listened to yet. So now I can add some vinyl to my music collection -- and oh what music this is! They say if you don't dig this compliation you may actually be dead, and I am inclined to agree. The CD release includes everything on one CD though obviously you loose the satisfaction of bragging to your friends like this. ;P And do you know what is best about this - it didn't cost me a penny. Not one. I won it all last night from a student radio station I listen to (the Late Show @ www.sbn.co.uk). Unfortunately the only turntable I have access to is on my mothers really old hi-fi system, and mine at home doesn't have a turntable (the bastards!). Looks like David will be browsing eBay this afternoon looking for a new hi-fi. :-D So to make this more than a public announcement of my happiness today (sorry Christian but someones gotta be happy) my question is as the subject: do you still buy LPs? Either new releases or classics - DJ's not allowed to answer 'cause that would be cheating.

I haven't seen an LP for sale in at least a decade. I do, however, keep my turntable in working order, as my collection contains classics that I doubt will ever be re-released on CD (or whatever comes next). I recently had to buy a new drive band, as the old one was so stretched and dried out that it slipped constantly causing excruciating aural pain even when it wasn't playing Neil Young music. Fortunately, Technics (Panasonic) still sell parts on their website. Last I checked they still sold turntables, too! Mine was purchased in 1971 and has never needed a significant repair, so I'd highly recommend the brand. Word of the day: Rotundacrat

Don't worry too much. It's a failure rate of <0.5%, and they were both the round edged type which don't seem to be in production any more (obviously for a good reason)

It's indeed rather limited, and the number of releases certainly depends on the genre. A collection of records looks much nicer than a collection of CDs. You've got the big sleeve, sometimes gatefold, the inner sleeve. As for watching the LP on the turntable, some of them have completely mindbending labels :wtf: And don't forget the hidden message in the runout groove. Often 'A porky prime cut' if the guys at the pressing plant were fans :)

Also some turntables use diamond tips for the pick up heads. One of the best turntables is very strange. The actual turning bit of the turntable and the pickup head are totally seperate from the rest of the unit, resting in a kind of no-vibration zone. The whole thing is made from some very hard clear plastic and has weird little pointed legs. All of that to produce better sound, amazing huh?
