Seems to be a rather limited collection though, at least in terms of modern music; not really surprising as people expect at least an hour of music on a CD nowadays but LPs start degrading at more than 45 minutes. It's indeed rather limited, and the number of releases certainly depends on the genre. Paul Riley wrote: How does the constant "ssssssssssssssskkskkssssssssssssssssssssssskkssssss" noise provide a great mood? I don't have that. If you take good care of your records, and have a decent turntable, you won't hear those noises. Paul Riley wrote: Worse, how does removing an LP from a sleeve improve the experience over removing a CD from a case? I don't realy know. It just does. The LPs are in a nice big sleeve. A CD feels sow.... plastic. And it's nice to watch the turntable while listening. I am talking about listening to music (not in the background, so no other activities allowed in the meantime). ----------------------- New and improved: kwakkelflap.com My first CP article: Pseudoregisters[^] "When I hear of Schrödinger's cat, I reach for my gun." - Stephen Hawking

A collection of records looks much nicer than a collection of CDs. You've got the big sleeve, sometimes gatefold, the inner sleeve. As for watching the LP on the turntable, some of them have completely mindbending labels :wtf: And don't forget the hidden message in the runout groove. Often 'A porky prime cut' if the guys at the pressing plant were fans :)

I am no expert but things like stability (very important for good quality sound. Some turntables have really fancy decks with vibration reducing legs to, well, reduce vibrations.) Also some turntables use diamond tips for the pick up heads. One of the best turntables is very strange. The actual turning bit of the turntable and the pickup head are totally seperate from the rest of the unit, resting in a kind of no-vibration zone. The whole thing is made from some very hard clear plastic and has weird little pointed legs. All of that to produce better sound, amazing huh?

But they don't. A double LP is cheaper that the same thing on CD over here... ----------------------- New and improved: kwakkelflap.com My first CP article: Pseudoregisters[^] "When I hear of Schrödinger's cat, I reach for my gun." - Stephen Hawking

I just got my first (well first 4) LPs today! It was the AnotherLateNight Tommy Guerrero unmixed 3LP set and a 1 of 1000 additional one featuring a mixed version of Come Together (the Beatles classic for those that don't know) and some stuff read by Sir Patrick Moore that I haven't listened to yet. So now I can add some vinyl to my music collection -- and oh what music this is! They say if you don't dig this compliation you may actually be dead, and I am inclined to agree. In fact if you don't dig it I may just kill you to keep your genes out of recirculation for the good of mankind. If you can't play or don't want the vinyl release you can get the complication on CD from Amazon[^] or your local music store. The CD release includes everything on one CD though obviously you loose the satisfaction of bragging to your friends like this. ;P And do you know what is best about this - it didn't cost me a penny. Not one. I won it all last night from a student radio station I listen to (the Late Show @ www.sbn.co.uk). Unfortunately the only turntable I have access to is on my mothers really old hi-fi system, and mine at home doesn't have a turntable (the bastards!). Looks like David will be browsing eBay this afternoon looking for a new hi-fi. :-D So to make this more than a public announcement of my happiness today (sorry Christian but someones gotta be happy) my question is as the subject: do you still buy LPs? Either new releases or classics - DJ's not allowed to answer 'cause that would be cheating.

I have this vivid image of you guys in a smoking jacket, pipe clenched between your teeth, inviting the girl at the door in to see your etchings. (what can I say? I had a migraine yesterday, and this is the aftermath :~ )
